I am shocked and disgusted that inmates get free health care, to be honest.

I saw that one yesterday, and here's the thing: this wasn't his "only" choice. That whole article is holding up someone in a desperate situation who panicked and did something silly instead of stopping to consider all their options.

For example, the article states that the man was collecting government assistance. If his situation was such that he qualified for state aid, then he would likely qualify for medical aid at a free clinic. In fact, just by popping "Gaston, NC free medical" into Google, I got not just a list of free medical clinics in NC, but also a listing for a clinic right in the city where he lives. That's without doing any type of search regarding state aid that might have been available, or local civic organization/church charities that could have helped. The article isn't just advocacy masquerading as journalism, it's exploitation of someone in a bad situation who made a poor choice.

I heard it's a problem in Norway due to their cushy prisons / lax regulations. But as you said, nothing new here or elsewhere.

I don't have the numbers, but don't the Scandinavian countries have some of the lowest crime rates in the world?

I met two people at my first job who did the go to jail to get free food and accomodation thing. The best thing was how serious they were about it. It was exactly the same kind of demeanor that someone who really wanted a job would have had. They were so motivated and positive about the whole thing.

Yeah Norway does, or did a short time ago, have the lowest murder rate in the world.
