To be fair, faith actually IS evil. Faith is everything that's wrong with humanity.
religion is a product of a mix of society of humans and of humanity (or sentience) itself, so logically it inherits those characteristics for itself. i suspect that most likely, hundreds or thousands of years of this shit is inevitable for any sentient life in the universe whilst they figure out their origins. i ache for this specie and its survival
That being said, I find little correlation between religiosity and intelligence. Bigotry often comes out of it, but experience has shown me that even that is fairly equal across believers and non-believers. (e.g. 'atheist' transphobes and supportive christians) Especially on a personal level. You just hear the loud morons, I get to hear some niiiiice hypocrite self-labeled 'atheists'. (edit: common sense may have you believing otherwise, but reality doesn't have to agree with your common sense)
Remember that we're all flawed, our ability for logic is poor at best, we think in perceived patterns instead of deductively and we're all ignorant of almost everything.
I also find that intelligence has /nothing/ to do with what someone knows or doesn't know, but merely, and only about how /someone thinks/. Which I will sum up with this meme:
Consider all the things.
edit for ambiguity:
Ignorance does not necessarily open one up to close mindedness,
Belief does not necessarily lead to close mindedness.
To deny that we're a thriving specie despite our highs and lows, and groups of morons, is
nuts.
