Well let me ask you: do you draw a distinction between bandwagoners who earn their glory and those who don't? e.g., Napoleon

So, you're saying that his having the balls to get out there and face death isn't enough, he has to be a one-man army.

What you're doing is insisting on an unreal standard met by only your own unreal fantasies because you wish to deny real courage that exceeds your own real abilities.

Quote:
"Most...tell us that it is well that a speech should be delivered at the burial of those who fall in battle...it is hard to speak properly upon a subject where it is even difficult to convince your hearers that you are speaking the truth...he who is a stranger to the matter may be led by envy to suspect exaggeration if he hears anything above his own nature.

For men can endure to hear others praised only so long as they can persuade themselves of their own ability to equal the actions recounted: when this point is passed, envy comes in and with it incredulity..."

There's nothing manly about getting knifed and mugged in an alley, no.

I never said anything about him being a one man army. This rebellion has been going on for months. If he truly believed he'd have been there long before now. That's not unrealistic. I'm not sure about your reading comprehension at this point. Drink more fluids.

Nice job editing that shit about cops out. We get it, you don't like cops.

I edited it out because I wanted to give more emphasis to what I see as the real issue. And re. knifed in an alley - you're refusing to acknowledge my point which is that your claim that it's "none of his business" is hypocritical when you go into ghettos etc to play badass.

You say he's a fool for facing death when he's got a life in America. But you say he's just not badass enough for not having dropped what he was doing at that point in time and hurried right over. If he's facing death in the here and now (as you acknowledge) then how can you say his commitment is wanting?

Again. You insist on unreal standards for courage because you don't like it when real comparisons are unfavorable.

The sort of people who go to war then come home and brag about it fall into two categories:
1) Bullshitters who are lying about or exaggerating their exploits.
2) The sort of bastards who despite having seen the misery and suffering involved are still gleeful about their participation.

When I first moved back here, I hung out with a group of vets. You could tell the difference between the above and the people who were actually deserving of respect. One of them discussed a lot of his experiences in Vietnam with me after he found out what I originally did in the Navy one night, because he had been attached to a similar unit when he first went to Vietnam before we were heavily involved. He was sent as an "advisor." One of the other guys had a Bronze Star, but he didn't like to talk about it. The three of us DD'd everyone one night, then went back to one of their houses and made up for not drinking all night. Allen (the advisor) talked Buzz into telling me how he'd gotten his star. After the rest of his squad/unit had either been killed or seriously injured, he not only provided basic medical aid for the survivors, but held their position until support arrived. It was not a short wait.

The sort of people who are proud to have served and done their bit, I can understand. The ones who are 'proud' they killed someone...there's something wrong with those guys. Taking another person's life, even when you don't have any other choice, is a stain on your mind and soul. That's why the vast majority of decent men who actually saw some real bullshit don't like to talk about it. They don't want to be reminded.

The kid in Libya is a fool. I just hope his foolishness doesn't bring harm to himself or someone else.

There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity. It's easy to see which side of the line that kid is standing on, even if the line is so fine that you have difficulty seeing it.

What makes you think he's out there because he wants to kill people for fun, as opposed to simply wanting adventure, excitement, and to be in the thick of things?

Call me crazy, but "adventure, excitement, and being in the thick of things" sounds like it would be synonymous with "fun." As someone wise once said, "A jedi craves not these things."

Whenever Charlie goes on an ADVENTURE!, he wakes up with something stolen from him.

when do i ever go into the ghetto to do ANYTHING? I say he's a fool for going to libya yes, because its obviously not important to him, he said it'd make a cool story one day. If he really wanted to be there because he believed in the cause(which he doesn't) he'd have gone long before the heavy fighting was over and it was just a mopping up action. Facing death for a foolish reason(or no reason) is foolish no matter how you slice it. It's not an unreal standard for courage when I'm arguing with you, because you don't know dick about courage.

How about how you say all soldiers lack courage because they're surrounded by allies? and yet you accuse me of thinking this guy should be a one man army?

He is an IDIOT and should not be there. UNLESS MAYBE HES GOING TO WAR FOR OIL LOLOLS

implying that facing death is hard, or requires any kind of psychological density.

Verily, I have often laughed at weaklings who thought themselves proud because they had no claws.
