I think the problem is that it's all driven by media sensationalism.

The core complaints/issues of the two movements are very similar, and both very valid.

With that being said, like everything, there are people who fall on one extreme or the other. Since the media is in the pocket of the corporations and corrupt US Government AND interested in making $$$$$$, they would rather sensationalize everything by highlighting the extremists (thereby causing division, and improving ratings), rather than give credence to the issues that the movements are touching on.

Some tea partiers are racist mongoloids merely piggybacking on the movement to push through their own biased, bigoted agendas.

Some occupiers are lazy hippies merely piggybacking on the movement to push through their own biased, hand-out oriented agendas.

HOWEVER,

That doesn't mean that all occupiers and all tea partiers think that way, and it doesn't invalidate both movements - it just means that there's always fuck-tards who end up undermining movements, rather than helping them be successful. Unfortunately, the media likes to highlight these individuals as poster children for the movements to discredit the whole thing. And a majority of people (EX: Eturnal for OWS, Mayo for the Tea Party) buy into it.

It's really quite sad - and I'm mad at myself for buying into it too for so long.

Who they are is irrelevant. What they say matters.

Trying to pass off the entire movement as the work of drug-addled unhygienic rapists is doing wonders for your credibility (rofl), though. We get it, you're terrified of meaningful discourse on issues when someone other than your favored group is doing it.

Just break it down for me so I can understand this.

1- What are they protesting?
2- What are they saying? Like I said before, I see so many different messages coming from the movement (from pay my tuition, legalize weed, I need a job, etc.) that I don't know what they (the movement) is saying. I see a lot a noise from the loudest voices and I'm not sure that's the best representatives.
3- What do they want to change about what they're protesting?
4- How will they change it?
5- Will the change be positive?
6- Why 'occupy' a public space and waste tax dollars and cause strife in the communities? Why not go home at the end of the day and pick back up the following day when they're off work? (lol)
7- Why is the 'Occupy Oakland' schedule loaded with Yoga, Music Circles, Poetry Readings, Meditation Sessions and then hours of 'Let's play Politics' with their various 'committee' meetings... instead of, you know... protesting and stating their cause?
8- Why is it important for these occupiers to disrupt the day-to-day lives of people working in, and around, their encampments (and this is to include all the roadways and ports they've decided to congest with their presence). All that does is hurt local economies.

Thanks.

1) Generally, money in politics, misleading (or downright erroneous) reporting/broadcasting, and corporate personhood.
2) Every voice has its message, but if we're looking for things that seem agreed upon, what they're saying is that the American economic system is a plutocracy and that the vast majority of the country will never benefit from it.
3) Ideally, everything. OWS isn't a political movement. They're not trying to chip into the side of existing parties and get elected.
4) How will you solve world hunger? Less facetiously, by doing literally anything. I accomplish more while taking a shit than Congress has in years.
5) Mathematically, it must be. Narrowing (not eliminating) the gap in wealth disparity can't be anything but positive on a technical level.
6) Visibility. Considering how long it took for adequate coverage of supposedly peace-disrupting events like tent cities, do you think anyone would have noticed orderly demonstrators who showed up at 6:30 PM and left at 10 PM every day?
7) The committee meetings are where they decide on their next steps. I can't speak for Oakland (I live in NYC), but that sounds like some effort to organize, contrary to all this "lol they're unorganized and incoherent" drivel. Be consistent here, do you want them to organize and give you a clear message or not? The yoga and music's probably something to do while passing the time between sign-holding and raping every woman who enters the park.
8) Local economies (in NYC, anyway) really like the protestors. Do you have any notion of how much bank food merchants near Zucotti park were making? Park maintenance is an existing cost which will persist regardless of occupiers. An army of people who need to be fed and kept? It's like permanent tourists eating food and consuming entertainment in your district. Sounds like a win for small business owners to me.

Yes. DC too.

I also want to stress the economic plutocracy point that Tuhl made, that the vast majority of the country won't benefit. With what face do we call ourselves "patriotic Americans" and at the same time not care if our fellow Americans are benefiting from our system? Why do we want "dem illegalz" to gtfo when we wouldn't give two-hoots about them were they legal? I don't get it sometimes...

Now I don't agree with OWS on every front, but they definitely have some good points.

This is the best thing I've read so far as to a beginner's guide of OWS.

Oh, dear God, that explains a lot. If you read the juvenile blathering they excrete into Rolling Stone and take it the least bit seriously, you have piss-poor judgment, and are no longer allowed to make jokes about Foxnews, since you're basically mainlining the liberal alternative.

Call it what you want, Rolling Stone is terrible. Much like Robin Williams, it has become a parody of what it what it was when it was good. I bought one recently because of the Dark Side of the Moon anniversary article (which was good), and the political 'reporting' was hilarious. The musical stuff was fair-to-good, but the political stuff was basically like someone asked the guys at The Onion to write a spoof of how they thought a Rolling Stone article would read.
