It's probably some sort of parasite. The best way to determine if it is would be to discern if these people ate any of the same foods or visited the same foreign region recently.
The information in the article is conflicted though: if it's inorganic, how can it be the product of a biological process and not be man-made? In some cases they describe conflicted symptoms, too - open sores versus thick inorganic objects protruding from the flesh.
The fact they're canvassing for cases suggests there will be a lot of false diagnoses, and probably people who are legitimate hypochondriacs/schizos getting confused with legitimate cases of whatever this actually is.
