So I just got into Magic: The Gathering. I never played when I was younger (more into Pokemon cards) but my friends at UVA randomly picked it up and it's hella addicting. Anyone here play/played? Could use some advice since I keep getting my ass kicked. That, or find a way for me to kick this habit before it fully develops, what with only a month to go til school and MCATs fffffffffffffff

The starter decks are hit and miss. Some are better than others, but my personal recommendation will always be the Vampire deck. The best part is you can spend about $100 and get every card you need for a deck generally as long as it isn't rare lands.

I wouldn't really worry about getting obsessed with MTG.

Big rule of thumb: Try to have creature control spells of some kind. Most colors have some kind of card that does this. Green is really hard up for creature control, and Blue is kinda hard up. But they both have some, albeit they aren't as simple to use or as effective as other colors.

Examples:
Exile
Disfigure
Assassinate
Burst Lightning
Path to Exile
Incinerate
Gaze of the Gorgon
Repulse
Arrest

Almost all decks hurt when their creatures are unusable, and almost all decks have a large chunk of their deck creatures. It's not just an inability to block or attack, but it's wasted mana, inability to use creature abilities and sometimes defeated strategies.

Also, when it comes to what Meowth said, Chandra's deck > All imo.

I wasn't fully referring to the game for deck types strictly. Vampire starter is pretty good in itself as starter decks go.

The game is way, way more fun when people are just playing it for fun instead of playing to win. Competition is all well and good but there are theme decks (focusing on a creature type, a rule ex: all banding/all flying, the basic strengths of a certain color) and there are combo decks. The most fun I've ever had with magic was when people just built bullshit theme decks.

We played a number of 5 player games where each person was mono-color and their deck could only play to the color's base strengths (lots of creatures for green, burn for red, weenies and mass control for white). There's more skill in those games than the "hope you draw your combo" decks that competitive players use.

Some base suggestions though, 1/3 of your deck should be land. Smaller decks are better than bigger ones. Redundancy is important. Know the strengths and weaknesses of the deck your building and plan accordingly. Ban circles of protection.

I only played from Unlimited to Alliances, then some friend got back into it around the invasion block, but only for a little while. Building decks was always fun. Keep an eye on ebay or other sites and you can get a good deal on a lot of common/uncommon cards cheaply. One of my friends was running an ebay store for cards and wanted to get out of it. I got about 4 thousand assorted commons/uncommons for 30 bucks, which opened up a ton of deck-building options.

Wow, I didn't expect so much about mtg! I guess I've been missing out lol.

So far, I have my main deck which is mono-white with 3 planeswalkers (I got really lucky with the 4 boosters in the deck builder lol) which does really well. I'm currently working on a black/blue mill deck for team games and a "green/blue/artifact golem proliferate" deck for luls.

Wish you bros lived closer and we could have met up for some games.

I don't play with planeswalkers. Partly because I'm not sure how the mechanics work, but mostly because I hate any card produced that is given 'Mythic Rare' status.

Because Mythic Rare is pretty much synonymous with Overpowered Bullshit.

lol true, but it's such fun. But planeswalkers aren't OP, especially if you don't have much to protect them / get them in your opening hand. Basically, how they work is that they have life counters (like players) and they can add or subtract life to play their skills. Some skills add so that we can do the really awesome skills that take away. But the minus skills take forever to be able to get to - for example, it takes 4 turns for Elspeth, Knight-Errant to get her "everything is indestructible" move ready, and by then she's usually dead.

Think of it this way - planeswalkers are like players. They can be selectively attacked, just as in a multiplayer game, and you can block for however much you want, but if any damage gets through, it takes that much longer to power them up again.

You don't choose to attack the player or planeswalker, you choose which person to attack then you can assign the damage to the player or planeswalker for those creatures that weren't blocked. Trample damage is likely handled the same way.

We played Magic when I was in 3rd grade. I remember I made a Sliver deck, with a Sliver Queen! ( http://www.amazon.com/Sliver-Queen-Magi ... B0045F6L3G )

I think we had the rules all messed up...overall it was just kind of "meh" for me.

A couple of my buddies still play in the same MGT league at this comic book place every night.

Real card games are better. Let's play Texas Hold Em.

No I mean like if you have only like 2 weenies out there you can block with em, but if you have nothing at all to block, a player can attack with all his creatures directed at the planeswalker rather than to you. Also, Jace would be awesome in my black-blue mill deck (lol $80 fuck that) but his mill ability is at 10 and he starts at 3. It will be at least 4 turns before he can pull it off, and will probably be more since he will be targeted first.

Where is a good place to buy magic cards online? I found this one place but it has several vendors and separate shipping for each, so I'd have to pay $3.99 for a $0.25 card. Any ideas? I need to buy tons of commons, uncommons, rares, and like one or two mythics.

3) Print both on cardstock

Question about this card, can you exile creatures in the graveyards as well? I only play casually so I don't know for sure and I couldn't find anything saying I could or couldn't.

proxy or just go to a brick and mortar store. Lots of places that carry the boosters will carry singles.

I've played well before the planeswalkers but they look like shit.

Some of the theme decks I've made that I can remember:

Pestilence deck: based on this in conjuction with this and some prot black creatures like this

Shifting Skies deck: This one was fun just because it was so annoying to play against. This was the main ingredient, with cards that affected entire colors like this, which you could use this on. It was white/blue and had a lot of annoying bounce/counter spells in it with mass removal.

I had a counter deck that was fun, tons of thrall and squirrel counters. I had a bunch of the 3 color dragons from Legends and some other newer set. I put them all in one 5 color deck and just tried to discard everything I could so I could Living Death them all back.

I did have some very nasty competitive decks for when people took the game a little too seriously, but my group of friends were pretty laid back. My decks were more about trying some crazy shit that probably wouldn't work until a turn after I died anyway.

If you get enough people, Emperor is a fun gametype. Just don't allow anyone to make decks specifically for the Emperor, we had to ban two of our decks because things like this and this get a little too powerful.
