According to SPACE.com, a supermassive black hole was, four billion years ago, ejected from the CID-42 galaxy and is hurtling through space at 2000 km/s.

Quote:
If the researchers' interpretation is correct, it could mean that there are many supermassive black holes roaming unbound in the vast stretches of intergalactic space.

And it could be tough to track these objects down.

"These black holes would be invisible to us, because they have consumed all of the gas surrounding them after being thrown out of their home galaxy," said co-author Laura Blecha, also of the CfA.

Fuck.

The sooner you accept that in some yet undetermined amount of time all of Earth will cease to exist, the more at peace you'll be.

Its beyond anyone's control. The fact that life has ever existed means that it will always exist.

Look at it this way: there's absolutely nothing we can do about it, and if one ever comes close enough to start fucking shit up, we'll all be dead instantly and painlessly.

even if 20 trillion black holes were ejected from 10 trillion galaxies every 5 minutes for all 13 billion years of existence, the chances of one coming into contact with us (or any stellar system) during our infintessimaly small and insignificant existence would be so astronomically minute your feeble brains could barely wrap around it.

Maybe one day we'll come to a realization that will spark an event that will swallow our world

or something

oh, also you could look at it this way. it would take light 674 years to depart from CID and reach it's nearest galaxy HGY-76509. the human race will surely have destroyed itself by then.

I believe it will happen within our lifetimes, if humanity continues its present course left unchecked.

I don't know all there is to know about astrophysics, but isn't everything always constantly in motion? Black holes should be moving too, right? How is this surprising?

I personally feel like the Sun is going to Supernova and vaporize us all before this roaming black hole business becomes an issue.

My understanding is, our sun is too small to go nova, and is more likely to gradually decay into a white dwarf or neutron star.
