haven't biked for years.

it's too busy around here, hate the city, too many main roads/highways for it to be enjoyable. haven't really looked into any bike tracks, though. maybe in the near future!

This is probably a silly question but do bikes have snow-tire equivalents? I guess if you don't do any offroad that's kind of unnecessary, but I have no concept of how often streets/sidewalks get plowed in Montreal.

Also, been biking recently. Usually around 30-40 miles a week. Can't compete with your nerd 300+ km/mo.

Yeah, you can get low-pressure tires that are really knobby or even studded. I would never ride this bike in the winter though, I just bought it because all of the 2011 bikes are on sale now and most of the 2012 bikes seem to be increasing in price without justification. For example, the bike I just got the MSRP is going from $3200 to $3500 and it looks like all that's changed is a marginal wheel upgrade, and a different crank that I'm not sure is any better/worse. It's going to suck so bad waiting 4 months to be able to ride it, it's going to kick the shit out of my old bike.

Re: The distance you ride, it really depends how much you ride, your bike, etc. When I had a mountain bike that shit sucked to go anywhere. When I got my 1st road bike a few summers ago I probably did like 30km/week, then 50km/week, at the end of this summer I was doing ~150+ km/week depending how many times a week I biked to work.

I have a hybrid bike because i take a lot of shortcuts through dirt roads and shit to get where i'm going, but i usually go between 10-20 miles a week.

drastically fewer, in this cold.

$3200 for a bike cannot be justified at all by me. It better be lighter than mine and have those front/middle shocks and mine already weighs like 8 pounds or something.

$3200 is definitely a lot, mine was $2640+tx because it's 2011 clearance time. Maybe a bit surprising for people that don't ride, but it is EASY to spend over $3200 on a road bike. There are also a lot of good bikes for less than that too, though.

You can definitely get a decent aluminum road bike with a decent group set like SRAM Apex for ~$1200, or buy used for less. The more expensive you go stuff starts turning carbon, stuff shifts smoother/brakes faster, stuff gets stiffer (stiffness = more efficient power transfer from pedals to wheels), wheels get better, everything gets lighter. Just like computers, cars, and many other things you have to find at what point the price:quality diminishing returns start becoming not worth it to you and decide how high or low you want to go from there.

There is no way in hell your bike is 8 pounds though, it is probably triple that. My new bike is around 16-17lb from things I've read, not sure for exactly for my frame size and I haven't weighed it myself, it is significantly lighter than my old aluminum frame though.

I'll go weigh it after my morning shift. Spending more than $500 on a bike is already too much. I question why you didn't get one with at least a middle shock for small bumps and such. I could never go back to a bike without it.

It doesn't register on my scale by itself, so with my fatass holding it and basic math tells me it weighs 25 pounds. It certainly doesn't feel that much and I work with boxes all day. Maybe the large size makes it seem less.

Not sure if trolling but a full suspension bike is for different purposes than a road bike. Way heavier, thick tires, suspension, frame geometry. You'll go much slower on a mountain bike if you're outputting the same amount of energy you would on a road bike.

Middle suspension is a necessity once you used it once. Not every road or walkway is freshly paved.
