I was in Tempest (and am in Space People) and there is in fact a large group of Dissension in SP.

It's just good/evil points. In situations, there will come choices where it gives you good or evil points. (Also, more then often then yourself getting points, you get good or evil points with your companion.) It just alters your story line and how evil your character is or how good it is.

When I played my Sith Bounty Hunter (What I'm going to be playing,) choosing all the dark side options made it really cool and fun. The cut scene animations are evil and worth picking if you're looking to go pure evil.

There are items that are only available for differing levels of light or dark, so a certain piece of armor may have a req of Dark 3. I don't think the light side does anything to your character (thought I may be wrong), but dark side characters have their eye colors change, skid colors change, and 'evil' facial alterations.
