Knowing the heartbreak that will come eventually, do you think it's worth having a pet?

I won't be getting another dog while I'm in the academy, because its unfair to keep an animal alone for that amount of time, not to mention how long you have to spend training and getting the dog to understand boundaries, etc. But hey maybe I'll end up in the K-9 unit and end up with a police dog. that'd be fucking awesome.

anyway here's my dog.

Being in the K-9 unit would be one of the best things ever.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Here's my dog. He was a good one. Never wanted to be a pain. Once or twice when we were out longer than we thought we were going to and had no one else to let him out, if he had to use the bathroom he'd get in the bathtub so it was easier to clean up. It was like he knew.

Even in his last weeks, he started to get a little leaky and couldn't even lift his leg up but he started going outside 3 times as much trying to not make a mess.

He was an awesome friend. He had a good life and did lots of things. He got stolen, followed me to school, took roids for a small time, broke multiple 800-1000 lb links when he was an outside dog for a short time, he climbed fences, destroyed soccer ballls as well as countless tennis balls and T-Shirts and he was happy.

: [ thread is making me miss my dog, had to put him down a couple of years ago. He was 22 and just didn't seem to be liking life so much anymore, he had a lot of trouble getting around, couldn't see and could barely hear but to his credit he just didn't want to give in to father time.
Guess I can put up a pic to, even though its not a very good one(he was sleeping).

That RHCP song was written for Flea's dog. In case anybody was wondering. If you already knew that, I tip my virtual hat.

It's on the older side but no, iirc some dogs have lived into their late thirties.

29 Years is the oldest dog (which died in the 30s) according to GWR

The 'oldest dog' that died recently was almost 27 years old.

Pretty much in the situation now. :( Dog I had growing up with basically, she's 12, I'm 17, so we grew up together. Recently, we took her to the vet to find:
-Kidneys failed (Or failing)
-Same with Liver
-Tumor
-Worms (treated for.)
-Went from 26 pounds to 13 pounds in around 4 months, which was super unhealthy, but due to the listed above.

Due to this, she's gone almost insane. She doesn't remember how to eat, drink, and go outside like she used to. We've got to force give her water, and she's gone the past 3 days without eating anything, but she did that a week ago, too. She'll go sit next to the woods, and lay down there (she never stepped foot near the woods in the 12 years she's been alive other than to go to the bathroom.) So she'll just aimlessly wonder around almost like she's never seen the place, and just sit and lay down at places that are so bazaar for her to lay. Hopefully she'll eat sometime soon, it sucks when the vet says there's nothing more to do for her than to love her, and that's it.

Animals:
Fun to pet.
Better to chew.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

I'm sleepy, but I'll try too. (PS: No pictures available except of my kitties)

I had a cocker spaniel that I named "Bart" - He decided to chew through a lamp cord while our family was staying in a hotel room. We heard a BZZZZZZZZT and the light turned off. We went over and saw the dog lifeless on the ground. We buried him at a nearby construction site. Was pretty shitty for a 5 year old.

Then we got a really fancy dog... a blue merle sheltie. I think he was from a line of show dogs or something because we gave him a very showy name... Delta Blues Montgomery, or Monty for short. I guess we thought he would follow in his parents pawsteps. It turned out that he was a stupid animal and he wouldn't have done well in any competition and because of the dogs worthlessness, my old man hated him. Then, one day I was outside playing in the yard with the dog and a massive dalmatian came through the yard to attack me. The dog lunged at me and I put my arm up to shield my face, so he bit down onto my elbow and left a couple deep holes in my arm. My little sheltie, about 1/4 the size of the dalmatian, lept up and latched onto the dalmatians neck and did what he could to get the dog off my arm. After a few seconds of Monty's attack, the dalmatian let go and turned to the dog... but I helped fight the dalmatian back at that point. /flex I told my old man about Monty coming to my defense and from that day on my dad loved that animal. Dumb as fuck but was ready to come to my defense...

Monty lived to be about 12 years old but his body started shutting down. He started losing control of his systems and shitting and pissing all over the place. We just cleaned up after him because we couldn't bear the thought of putting him down, even though we felt like he might have been in pain (even though he never showed it). Then one night while I was at work I got a call from my parents saying I had to come home... so, I did... and in the hallway Monty laid dead. They said the dog got up from his nap, walked over to my dad to get a back rub, then died quietly in the hallway. I called my wife (who was my g/f at the time) in tears and I said, "My fucking dog is dead." They got him cremated and he sits in my parents living room, next to the entertainment center, with a little metal sheltie statuette and a picture of him. Best stupid dog ever.

Animals are for eating.

(I'm not really a pet person. The above is a joke though, and I totally understand and appreciate the concept of companion animals. I just don't have any pet stories)
