The game Divine Divinity(shit name, but great top down rpg) had a long paragraph in the manual thanking me for buying the game instead of pirating it, because they are a small company and put their heart in soul into the game.

warmed my cold, dead heart.

I have such a minimal interest in D3 PvP anyway. If what they say is true, and that trying to fix the system is going to delay the actualy fucking game, then i'm totally fine with this.

At least until they decide to charge us for it as a DLC. Then i just wont buy the DLC since i wasn't that interested anyway.

GIVE ME MY DUNGEONS AND STUFF.

WoW arenas were absolutely terrible and caused nothing but headache for the 99%+ that didn't play them competitively, considering there were lots of changes because of Activision desperately trying to balance and tweak their e-sport that nobody outside of the neckbeards on Tich took seriously.

I'd be fine with Diablo 3 if they didn't even bother putting in arenas. Then again, after the nightmare that was ToR, I'm never buying anything from EA or Activision ever again.

Pirating what seemed like $100 in DLC for ME2 last night was a pretty great feeling last night.

I don't know what you've done with Mayo, but you're obviously not him because I've agreed with every single thing said in your last 3-7 posts, especially the shit about Activision and EA.

WoW arenas were totally awesome for two solid years.

WoW arenas were a flawed idea, and the implementation spiraled downward as the dev team lost touch with the game and Activision-Blizzard made the choice to push them way past their proper sphere.

What should have been a sub-game for hardcore PvPers became the focal point of game balance and fell prey to Blizzard's "consumption numbers" mania and desire to make WoW PvP an esport. The latter goal was particularly pernicious because it's clear that if there's anyone out there who
knows what esports actually are supposed to be or how they can be monetized, it's not the WoW Dev Team.

This mania was further aggravated by the whining on the forums about arena gear availability which was in turn due only to the fact it was so much easier to get than PvE or BG gear and therefore drew in hordes of 10-games-a-week and bro/CoD types that should never have been arenaing or even playing the game itself in the first place.

And so began the enormously destructive constant micro-balancing and over-proliferation of PvP gear.

The proper model for WoW PvP was classic WSG and AV: a simple and intuitive game of capture-the-flag made interesting and engaging by the mechanics of the game and the drama of its community, and a big, RPish battlefield consisting of a creative mix of PvE and PvP. The strength of those models is that they were consistent with the essence and appeal of WoW itself.

Instead of improving the very flawed implementation and gross imbalance of AV, Blizzard decided to oversimply what they did not have the patience to learn to fix, and adopt inappropriate paradigms from other games and genres like CoD and Chinese MMOs.

And so we got trash like RBGs and Isle of Conquest.

It says a lot about Blizzard and its WoW Dev Teams that such a remarkable game with so much promise failed in so many ways to live up to its creative potential. It's extremely clear that Blizzard has some brilliant minds working for them, but those brilliant minds aren't calling the shots.

As WoW has aged and evolved, the big but very flawed heads (F&T) running the Vanilla show (who were responsible for a lot of the wacky oversights and terrible balance/itemization of Vanilla, because they were gamers and not designers) have given way to development committee.

This is why the game no longer follows a consistent vision but instead gravitates to whatever happens to be politic in the focus groups and dev discussions, zig-zagging wildly between patches. This is why the dominant personality of the dev team is Greg Street, the Ronald Reagan of WoW - a smiling face who has a remarkable talent for making very bad ideas sound like very good ideas.

This is Mr Street's single great gift, and it goes almost wholly unrecognized. He is a terrible oceanographer and a horrid game designer, but a brilliant politician. Unfortunately, the ability to get people on board with terrible ideas is no substitute for good, original ideas.

This is also why Blizzard micro-balances constantly and drives PvErs up a wall while taking so long to fix S5 DKs and frost mages: because those issues are simple from a game design point of view, but very prickly from a political point of view, involving questions of sub numbers, favoritism, and blame amongst the devs. Committees do not easily undertake bold, decisive action.

This trend towards the committee and politico dev - the lead devs that sell the clueless execs Moon Pies - is why the MMO field, and gaming in general, is heading further into a swamp, and I will say it again, it will end with the Indians coming and giving the Americans a run for their money.

p. good post

I think blaming DKs (and Paladins, they're just as guilty as DKs) for the woes of WoW pvp is really giving them far too much credit. I only feel like Season 5 was ruined entirely by both classes. Everything else was a problem far beyond a bunch of bad players playing an overpowered class.

Strand of the ancients is bad and whoever made it should feel bad. Druids not being able to shift snares is fucking stupid. I used to be able to pretend I could 1v1, now it's just a joke. Fuck arena balance choices post-BC. Going from pretty much the most mobile class to one of the least is depressing as shit. Frost mages can DIAF and as long as death knights have Desecration they are the most pathetic thing you can play in PVP.

Back to Diablo 3, I don't care about their pvp arena because if I ever got around to it it would be well after release anyways since i would be too busy leveling 3 witch doctors.

I always hated Arena.

I also was always a priest.

I think there's a correlation there.
