I never really noticed problems with the altitude, nor did I feel that I became more intensely intoxicated. As for skiing or snowboarding, I suggest you do the one that your buddy can teach you best. Since you've done neither, you have no habits that need to be broken. You are a clean slate. I think you are more likely to break a leg on skis. One thing: Be wary of the friend who tells you that "you'll never figure this out on these bunny slopes! Let's get to the top!!" Also, your most important lesson: learn how to check your speed and stop FIRST.

Have fun!

Good ol Boredalt, always giving nice advice.

I was on the Ski Team when I was in Prep School. Was sort of funny since I live in Cali, by the beach. Before joining the team I had been skiing a few times and since I have very good balance, I did pretty well. I have no idea what I was thinking trying out for the team. Learning how to "really ski" was crazy. Racing is much different than casual skiing. It is absolutely terrifying and exhilarating all, all at the same time. I enjoyed my seasons on the squad. Thought about doing ski patrol during winter break, but I couldn't justify driving 2 hours each way every day for 3 weeks.

Snowboarding sucks. I hate falling on my ass, and falling on my ass on ice sucks even more. I like the control you have with skiing and how fast you can go, cutting through the ice.

Favorite snow activity: Hanging out in the jacuzzi, jumping out, rolling in the snow, and hopping back in. Good times :)

I'll volunteer for jacuzzi times. I can't ski because it puts too much pressure on my knees...not that I've been skiing since the early 90s before I destroyed those joints. I could totally dig on boiling myself in hot water outside in the freezing cold while drinking hot chocolate and/or adult beverages.
