I don't need to lose weight, I need to build a bit of upper body strength.
What's the best way to go about that?
I'm not concerned about my diet either; I subsist mostly on peas, spinach, bread, rice vermicelli, spaghetti, and various kinds of fruit, vegetables, and soup. I drink club soda and have bulk sherbet for dessert.
Develop a strong core first and foremost. It will help you more than jumping straight into strength training will.
Focus different muscle groups. Biceps and triceps, forearms, chest and I don't know if you intend on working to obtain a flat stomach (nor do I know your current stomach condition).
It's important to give muscles time to repair themselves. You don't wanna work out all the time. Give yourself time to rest, give the various muscles time to repair themselves, most importantly give yourself rewards for following your routine.
Dumb bells for forearms, lat pulls for triceps and lats (muscles on your side, think the V shape thing) pushups / sit ups for core / chest, rowing machine for core, bench press for biceps and upper body / chest. Pull ups for core.
Cardio is your best friend though. Strong core > all.
