I disagree that cardio is worthless. I'd hardly describe myself as a gym rat, but without a strong core you won't be able to lift as efficiently. I have a fairly serious back injury that limits my ability to lift. I'm focusing on cardio and toning along with diet for these reasons. I would love to start lifting more seriously, but I don't really know how to approach it. I've heard back injuries might as well be bodybuilding death sentences from some people, and then I've heard that it's possible to overcome but it's a long road ahead.

Whether or not to do cardio depends mostly on your over all daily activity outside the gym. If you are a desk jockey and video game nerd I would recommend the cardio. If your job consists of lots of walking daily or tons of physical labor like construction work I wouldn't worry too much. Again it all falls on personal preference and life style. I use cardio to help counter act my shitty metabolism. And that is on top of the fact I am highly active now days.

Dotzilla is right though. You can achieve an amazing body without doing cardio. Just watch your diet and set up a steady lifting routine. Once you start building muscle your body will naturally burn more calories. Another thing to look into is a good vitamin supplement. You will be depleting your bodies vitamin and minerals at a faster rate and it is pretty tough to replenish them through food alone.

Edit :: You can over come certain back injuries and do fairly serious lifting. You should really consult a physical therapist for advice in this area. They can give you a good list or simple exercises you can perform to strengthen your back without weights. Do this and then check back with them to see if your back problems have subsided and if the exercises have helped. I would think dead lifts and squats are out of the equation for you but there are so many other lifts. One trick to taking stress off the back is making sure your abs are up to par. Weak abs can put more strain than necessary on the lower back when lifting.

I would never call cardio worthless either. But it can be a preference. I love the fact i can hit the elliptical machine for an hour on max setting keeping a pretty decent pace. I always feel energized afterwards. I definitely feel better when i am on a regular cardio routine.

Cardio has nothing inherently to with core. I feel like you're mixing up cardio vs bodyweight exercises vs lifting.

If you want a good body, cardio is pointless. Like Dotz said diet will do most (like 90%) of the work cutting body fat and you need to lift to get all the pretty muscles you want to show off. Cardio will just let you run faster.

However since Brykon mentioned wanting to be fitter then cardio is something he should definitely do.

QQ beaten to it

ok seriously, how famous was zyzz really?

He showed up on Gamefaqs one day as some skinny kid with no shoulders then he became ripped and died in a sauna.

Shit still blows my mind.

I don't see what that has to do with cardio. Sounds to me like he died of dehydration trying to manipulate his BMI/weight class.

Gamer nerds are at especial risk of death to dehydration even if they're not batshit insane like me or workout nuts like that guy. Most of those accounts you hear about gamers, especially Koreans, dying at their keyboards, are due to dehydration, not fatigue or sleep deprivation..

There are tons small things a person can do to help in weight loss as well. Make sure you chew your food properly. When at rest drink ice cold water, which forces your body temp to rise in order to bring the water in line with your normal body temperature. Stuff like that may not be game changers but every thing helps in the long run.

If the guy all the sudden becomes "ripped" you can almost always put money on growth hormones or some kind of steroid. The fact he died as quickly as he got ripped( or it sounds here), makes it even more plausible. Plus as Aestu stated, he probably didn't properly hydrate for workouts.

I wasn't questioning that. I have no doubt he died with a pro wrestler's heart.

I just find his whole story hilarious since to me he was always the skinny kid with no shoulders but everyone else knew him as the fulli sick ripped stripper who died in a sauna.

From what I remember, the kid died of cardiac arrest. This was likely due to cardiac hypertrophy brought on by steroid use. It's pretty common.

we're all gonna die sauna or later

also how dare any of you mention the High King's name. but seriously though, Zyzz didn't die from dehydration. he died from a heart attack in a sauna from taking too much Clenbuterol for too long. which also isn't a steroid.

but srsly though, he wasn't natty and for sure did a couple cycles. you don't die from a couple cycles though. you don't die from steroids period.

Not even from cardiac hypertrophy?

I don't remember the details of his death, and I know palpitations and tachycardia are common with Clenbuterol abuse (which would explain the cardiac arrest), but you can definitely die from steroids.

steroids are nothing but testosterone supplementation. you can definitely die from any unsafe abuse of any OTC or prescription medication.

aspirin kills 3950 americans a year
anabolic steroids kills 3 americans a year
