Looking good is frowned upon because its not "manly"

Completely unrelated: there's no shortage of jaded misogynist douches that feel owed something OR uppity princess types that think they can date Brad Pitt.

ITT: Rikki got a manicure in high school and all of those jock jerks made fun of him for it.

Looking good can be "manly", but spending more time than many women on your hair and spending thousands of dollars on designer clothes sure as hell isn't.

The second part for certain.

What about spending tens of hundreds of dollars on clothes that look just as good on you as designer clothes?

Is it unacceptable to look good? I mean I don't make an effort (unless something requires a suit, which is fine unless it's summer) because I like t-shirts and pants covered in pockets, but it's never occurred to me to shit on someone for wearing a button-down.

I don't know anything about Diary of a Wimpy Kid but the title alone makes me think it's hopeless trash.

Naw, I didn't start caring about how I dressed until a few years ago.

And dressing well is more "gentlemanly" than "manly." Additionally, in any sort of professional environment, showing up wearing $30 shoes will cause you be taken less seriously than if you showed up in $300 shoes.

I'm actually not sure when I last wore a t-shirt in any situation other than when doing laundry.

This.

If you want to be any sort of leader or professional, you'd better dress the part. Sorry, it's how society works.

It's hardly a point worth apologizing for. If you want others to take you seriously, the first step is to take yourself seriously; if you can't even take care of yourself, how can I expect you to take care of my investment/company/etc?

Bill Gates...or Lenin, Trotsky or Mao...or really any self-employed person or enterpreneur.

Short of being a slob, it's only necessary to dress the part if one is an empty suit wholly reliant on toadying to get by in life.

It's a matter of playing by the rules until you're the one who makes the rules.

Unless you are an actor, and then you can wear whatever the hell you want and people will still worship you.

Women, in general, appreciate well dressed men. It can be annoying for me when a man spends more time primping than a woman does.

It takes me about 30 minutes to get ready in the morning, with most of that time being spent in the shower. (I take long showers. A rare moment alone for me) I spend about 5 minutes total on hair and makeup. I keep it very simple and classy. (I usually just wear eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss.) I rarely buy clothes, but when I do, I shop for quality over quantity.

I like a man in a nice button down shirt and a pair of nicely fitting jeans with dressy shoes. Looks sharp to me. Although at the end of the day all that matters to me is his personality. Clothes are just clothes.

Nonsense. This absolutely never happens.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. Live by the rules, be lived by the rules. You never see executives go back and abolish that stupid system that got them where they are, but you see T-shirt clad startups all the time. People never outgrow the system that makes them.
