Another story from a couple weeks after my story above. We had travelled from the rainforest to Cusco, and were supposed to go do some field work at a research station in the cloud forest. We hired a driver in the city through a contact we had, since the roads there look like
Image

Neither of my companions nor I knew where the place was, but the driver said he had been there the previous week, so we thought it would be np. I got a bit suspicious after he stopped to ask for directions at one point and started backtracking, and more so when he abruptly stopped the van, got out without an explanation, and then a few minutes later said the road was out further along and we had to take an alternate route.

Eventually we got to the road that descended down the valley we wanted. We knew the research station was at a pretty high elevation, and sure enough about 10 minutes down the road we saw a sign for it. The driver said that was for the boundary of the station property, and the station was a bit further down the road.

He continued insisting it was coming up as we descended further and further. Along the way, we encountered a group of four drunk French tourists who had managed to drive one of the wheels of their jeep off the road. After trying to ram the van past them and almost forcing the jeep completely off (that part of the road is about 1.5 car widths across), our driver stopped and with a bit of pushing and much laughing from the French guys we got the Jeep back on the road. They offered us some wine to celebrate, but we weren't really in the mood at that point.

A couple of hours after we had passed the sign, the forest was starting to transition into rainforest (which happens about 1500m elevation below where we were supposed to be) and we managed to convince the cranky driver to turn around. Night had fallen when, about halfway back to the top of the road, we came around a corner to see a semi stopped in the middle of the road. Apparently a minor landslide has happened sometime after we passed on the way down, and the road was blocked with mud and trees. We helped the truck driver and some guys from another truck blocked on the opposite side dig and move debris until there was a narrow path to drive through, and about an hour later we were moving again.

We saw no signs of a station until we got back to the sign we had seen 10 minutes into our journey down the valley. We stopped and looked around and found a locked gate surrounded by a barbed wire fence, hidden just down the slope from the road. We climbed over the fence and found that we were indeed at the station, but it was completely dark and everything was locked up. After 30 minutes of searching I was ready to go to sleep on the ground when the cook woke up in one of the cabins and let us into the place we were supposed to sleep. The next three days there were amazing (aside from a hike from hell which almost killed my advisor), but we were glad when we got back to Cusco and got rid of the driver.

One time I got vaulted out of a most pit. As I'm stumbling trying not to fall on my face, I feel a hard tug on my shirt. Said tug threw me back into the fray.

When I looked behind me, it was a small... I'm sorry... PETITE girl with short black hair. Maybe weighed 100 lbs, maybe.

Bear in mind I'm 6'3 and fat.

It was awesome.

I have one that doesn't involve me:

There is this older couple, who are friends with my Dad+Step Mom. Bob, the husband has been trying to watch his weight. One morning he steps on his digital scale and looks down to see "FAT" on the display. Steps off, steps on again, and the same thing happens.

So he calls Luann, and tells her the scale is calling him fat. She doesn't understand, so she comes up. He gets on, and the display reads. She says, "Babe, that says 'BAT'. The batteries are dying. Let me get your glasses."

That's a good one to tell your grandparents.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

Wow these are great, I honestly enjoy hearing about awesome stuff in other people's lives. In such a big world there are no two people alike and everyone has something interesting to say, it's great!

Hmmmm, a couple of random tid bits:

I've been to 49 states.
I once got in a fight with a gangbanger. I didn't die. Yay.
I've been an exchange student in Russia, England, Italy, Spain, France and Germany.
My German host family used to lock me in the basement.
Jesse Jackson kissed my broken finger (YUCK!) while I was interviewing him
I once interviewed Frmr. Pres. Clinton while he was in Vietnam
I played piano in the Governor's Mansion
I competed in the Miss America program
I used to raced GS and Slalom
I've been to 5 out of 7 continents
My husband ran over me with a car at our engagement party and broke my leg.
I dated a Hockey player
I nearly died while having my son
My highschool sweetheart was murdered by my bestfriend (and he tried to take me out too.)
My dad saved his bestfriend from falling off a crevasse at Mt. Fuji. He went on to become a billionaire. (My dad's story, not mine. But cool)
I once went on a date in a graveyard
I broke my jaw 3 days before my wedding
I've been stalked by over a dozen men and several women

Really, I've had so many totally crazy things happen in my life. I've also had some pretty traumatic stuff happen. (Worse than the things that I have listed here - private though.)

epic

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.

wat, and wow, you mam are the kind of person i hope to surround myself with in the future.

What i can contribute:

-Born with Jaundice to a father who had a vasectomy and a mother with scared fallopian tubes (2nd of 4 kids all of which had a 1/5 million chance of occuring, which either means a shit ton of sex or a boatload of luck)

-2 Scars on Forehead, 1 on eyebrow (which hair doesn't grow on looks cool) and a severe concussion all due to stupid decisions

-Dad once played pinball w/ santana (Worked as a Roadie for one of his shows)

-20 years old and w/o a drivers license

I am guessing you mean that you want to be a billionaire, not that you want to get murdered :P

That's messed up. Did you call them Nazis? Did they lock you up because you were bad, or just because of some random psycho reasoning? Also, could you report that to some exchange student board and get them in trouble?

Haha, that is actually a funny story. They were a VERY strange family. When I first went to live there they gave me a pizza with meat hidden under the cheese to see what would happen. I nearly died. I had my first experience with a German hospital within days of arriving.

My bedroom was in the corner of the basement, so if they went out, they would lock the door at the top of the stairs. I am not sure if they thought I would steal something or what... I complained to the program head. My host family was her sister's inlaws, so I didn't get anywhere. After that things got MUCH worse. They wouldn't let me call my parent's, etc.

One day my friend Thomas came by to see if he could take me to a movie. I was locked in once again. He called the police and they broke a window. Shit hit the fan and I ended up going home. My dad sued the program and I returned later on my own.

LMAO, no. My dad is very wealthy, but my Uncle Pat is the billionaire. He only sued to recoup costs and to oust the former program head.
