That's completely ignorant.

"Submission" refers specifically to submission to God and no one else, and that is the central tenet of the Islamic faith. In that sense, it captures the best part of monotheism: all men equal before God and God above all men.

Middle Eastern tyranny has nothing to do with Islam and everything to do with Middle Eastern politics. The most stagnant tyrannical Middle Eastern states have apostate governments - Syria and Iraq are socialist and Egypt and Jordan are non-religious. Because they have oil and people today have this retarded belief that countries shouldn't be allowed to solve their problems through violence, they can't break their political stagnation.

Islam fell behind the West because of long-term processes in the West: stable and centralized political authority and renewed interest in classical humanism. A lot of this was due to the self-correcting nature of the Middle Ages: the cycle of oppression and violence that ultimately played itself out and led into the modern age, with centralized government and rule of law.

Hmm, I suppose this makes sense. I only got a business degree because my parents pretty much told me I had to. Thinking back on my business classes, I didn't really learn much that I couldn't have figured out on my own. I learned significantly more about business doing an internship and working than I ever did in the classroom.

This might just be an indictment of higher education itself.

That being said, I had multiple job offers when I graduated. The degree certainly got my foot in the door, but I assume I interviewed well enough and was able to demonstrate enough skill to warrant aforementioned job offers.

Also, from a practical standpoint, getting a music, theatre, history, english, art, etc degree doesn't exactly lend itself to getting hired out of college. I know many of my high school friends who are now working at Applebee's with their amazing Philosophy degrees. I know even more who are simply unemployed with loads of student debt. By contrast, every business major I know has a decent job that isn't some minimum wage hellhole.

I'd agree that higher education is retarded, and I'd put those other majors in the same basket.

I don't specifically aim to have a certain number of friends...it's no quota. I have many friends, however. It's not because I feel I need approval, or that I can't speak up if I don't like something about someone. Quite the contrary, if i don't like someone, I simply won't be their friend. However, I think I have a large capacity for empathy. I enjoy the company of others and can relate to a wide variety of people. I'm also not a mean person, so I find that people find me to be quite amiable. Therefore, I am able to form many relationships in my life and have great friendships with great people. I fail to see how this makes me morally incorrect.

It doesn't. I'm referring to people who boast about how many friends they have, or actually think that saying "you have no friends" is anything but laughable.

I think we have different definitions of dating. I am currently dating people because I am trying to find romance. Sex has entered the equation, but I am not going out with girls just to get into their pants. I am genuinely interested in meeting a nice girl, and getting to know her. Dating is the forum with which you can get to know a girl who you don't interact with on a daily basis (at work or whatever). I meet people through normal social events (out at a bar, party, whatever) and I have gotten a few numbers from girls...I then call that girl...and take her out in an effort to get to know her better. To me, that's the function of dating. Some people do date simply to get laid, not all do.

Same difference. I don't see the point of dating. If you meet someone you enjoy spend time with them. Doing contrived things or going through a ritualized process is a study in futility. It is there or it is not.

The trick is finding compatibility and love...which is quite possible.

No. All that matters is compatibility. If you are compatible you will come to get along. There is cool love and there is hot love. Cool love is what you want in a marriage and it is inevitable with the compatible. Put a rooster and a hen in the same room long enough and they'll make a nest.

I know that, but when you have leaders who claim descendence from muhammed, saying that they speak the word of god, or in some cases claimed they were god, you find a people easily oppressed/controlled.

The longer it goes on, the more ignrained it becomes in society.

No Muslim has ever claimed descent from God, or being God. You are ignorant.

You are further ignorant because there are very few theocratic Middle Eastern countries, and the two Middle Eastern theocracies - Iran and Israel - are by far the most advanced. The weakest and most unstable Middle Eastern states are apostate, the only exception being Turkey.

Don't Muslims believe Jesus, one of the Prohpets of Islam, was born of an immaculate conception and also a performer of miracles by God's will and permission? Also, is Jesus truly the only Son of God according to Christianity? I'm pretty sure the Bible refereed to Adam and David as Son of God. Perhaps Son of God means something else... like, a Creation by God, which all humans are in a theological sense.

that's not nihilism, it's simply saying that matters of aesthetic opinion only have meaning in the reference of the holder of said opinion.

if something is popular, it does not suck to the people with whom it is popular.

and since i think the thread is stupid for that reason, but other find it entertaining, the thread makes its own list of popular things that i think suck.

Throught the middle ages and afterwards, the arab world was in decline, and still in some ways are a backwards (from our perspective) group of people. Such beleifs alowed leaders to take advantage of them, rule their lives with little fear of opposition.

I agree with hating the submission aspect of Islam (and all religion, fuck you god, you have no right to exist), but I had to address this because it's stupid. It's only in the last century and a half that the middle-eastern Muslim world has been in "decline" as you put it. They were generally on par with European powers in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the constant back-and-forth of the Crusades and other such territorial disputes rather than the dominance of one side. The Ottoman Empire, which kicked into overdrive around the 1400s, not only invaded plenty of Southeastern Europe, they were also decades if not centuries ahead in terms of civil liberties and general tolerance of different faiths. When Europe was expelling/killing Jews, the Ottoman Turks were like "hey, come here, all we do is make you pay a tax to live peacefully and we'll waive it if you're an upstanding citizen."

So yeah. Islam is idiotic because it's a religion, but claiming that the Middle East has constantly been in Europe's shadow as a result is totally bogus and also I hate you.

More relevantly, I hate threads that start off being about one thing and devolve into another.
I also hate Call of Duty and all its drooling fanboys.

I still don't get this. Nobody around here calls it either, you just call it by the name of the drink. IE: Coke, sprite. it's like saying "I'D LIKE A DAIRY BEVERAGE" instead of milk.
