Yes, you do have to go to college to understand what a joke a PhD (and those for whom it is their only accomplishment) is.

It depends what you mean by "a joke". Completing a PhD is a tremendous amount of work, even if it doesn't require an exceptional level of ability.

Would you describe coal mining as a joke of a job? What qualifies a task as "a joke" to you?

Being a soup chef isn't necessarily a joke, but it becomes one when taken out of any proportion.

Having a PhD isn't necessarily a joke, but it becomes one when wearing it as a badge of intellectual superiority.

That's reasonable, but it's a bit of a leap from there to your earlier blanket statement "what a joke a PhD is".

It also pays better than getting a PhD.

I don't have it yet, and I can firmly say that doctoral studies & research in physics (whatever your specialization/research area may be) has no "joke" attached anywhere near it.

edit: I guess I'd have to "flunk out" and join the "internet quacks community" to understand the "joke".

I think you might have meant "soux chef."

Also, I actually was the SOUP CHEF for an Admiral for a while, and let me tell you, that was SRS FCKN BZNS. Though he took me golfing once a week, so that was pretty good.
