Excellent argument! I'm abandoning my studies and my dream of being a scientist, right at this moment! Thanks for changing my life!

Little known rule: if the post isn't under 75 words, containing obscenities in CAPS, or has an amusing image...90% of the time people other than aestu are just gonna skim.

You're missing your photos of your astrophysics formula shit to discuss this topic.

I am glad this thread was made. I actually just proposed a sort of community Q&A session on the moderator forums so that we can all better understand and shape FUBU according to our collective vision. More to come in a week or so.

The more we learn about that reality, the more we find out it is an expression of probabilities and relative perceptions. Quantum physics shows us that everything exists as a probability wave until measured, and general relativity shows us that two people in relative motion don't even agree on how to perceive time and space. That is to say, there is only one reality, but you can't entirely know it. It's a little sloppy on the specifics a lot of the time.

And more often than not, someone unwilling to put their intelligence to the test of debate is mostly afraid of not feeling secure in it. As they say, the more you learn the more you realize you don't know. Or to rephrase, the more intelligence you have, the less secure you are in it and the more interested you are in expanding and refining it, through academics and debate.

If the standard model of particle physics was shown to be wrong tomorrow (a simple case of showing that the predicted higgs boson does not exist, since it's the source of mass in the particles we know of in the theory), there would probably be more scientists, at least for a little while, fighting for it's survival or something of the sort (by attempting to show that the experiment was done wrong or something, assuming for this fictious example that it was done correctly) than scientists looking for new physics. It wouldn't even necessarily indicate stupidity - some would be skeptics, some are just humans and would attempt to save something familiar to them, and some would be just plain misguided or stupid. (keep in mind that it took years for the steady state universe theories to go away)

And this would be nothing new. Every major shift in our understanding of the world has been met with people unwilling to give up the old model just yet. It can even be a good thing, making the extoller of the new model work even harder to show his version is more accurate.

Even Einstein himself called quantum theory "spooky" and didn't like it at all.

Replace "exists" with "calculated" :-P (reality probably exists just the way we see it, it's just hard to figure out where all the smallest building blocks that we know of exactly are at a precise point in time and space, in which spin and energy states, and actually the uncertainty principle says that it's not possible to know all aspect of those systems at once)

Yup, but the theory wasn't as well developed at the time, and he was also wrong (wasn't the first time and that's nothing noteworthy anyway :P) on that count (either way, he worked on it a lot, and I think his exact words were "If quantum theory is true, physics as we know it is dead" (which is literally true, it moved physics from certainty calculations to probability plots, who knows if it was literal) and "I don't believe that god plays dice with the universe"). Quantum theory is I think the most successful theory that physics has when it comes to calculations, with a degree of precision comparable to measuring the distance between your shoulders and the moon, with the distance between your neck and the top of your head as the degree of uncertainty.

Oh and Einstein didn't like "spooky action at a distance", which is what Newtonian gravitation implied, a drive behind his developing of relativity (which sounded absolutely batshit at the time). He also tried to integrate a cosmological constant to the curvative = matter equation which would keep a steady universe (since then it has been a part of Tμv, with an interesting side effect), and to understand that you need to change your frame of reference - at the time, an expanding universe was a pretty alien concept, until Hubble observed and calculated it using redshift from the doppler effect (the precision was a flop, but it ended up being refined). And even then the steady state universe survived for a while.

I'll shut up now.

I doubt you go through life writing off its myriad realities as a bunch of probabilities. Cause if you do, you'll be banking on the probability the concrete wall you've been thrown into will spontaneously reorganize its atoms to allow your body to pass safely through. There's a probability of that, too, you know. Nonetheless, I feel quite certain beyond a doubt that it won't.

This coming from the person who raged on tinychat that signing into it with FB was absolute bullshit, then told "stop looking at the shiny buttons and you'll see the 'don't have one?' prompt".

For one that's not what a probability wave actually means. Two, recognizing a non-zero probability of something doesn't make it statistically relevant, so recognizing a probability doesn't mean you would "bank on it".

A more accurate description of what you appear to be trying to say is that the particles that constitute the atoms in the brick wall have numerous specific locations that they might be occupying at any given moment, with relative probabilities for each.
