Don't get me wrong. I have no real sympathy for these kids. I think they're a bunch of frat boy dumbasses. While they probably do need the living shit beat out of them, it's not the cops' job to do that whether they or anyone else want to pretend it is.

In instigating a fight, the cops ultimately gave these kids what they probably really wanted which was a bit of excitement and attention.

This is one of those times in life - "when stupid meets crazy".

Ultimately, though, I place supreme blame with the police because:
1. They are paid and are supposed to be professionals
2. They were both cowards and bullies, grossly overstepping their authority and using excessive force in a situation in which they were in no real danger from a bunch of drunkass white kids, while pointedly refusing to do the same in OTHER parts of Cincinnati which ARE dangerous and could use some hands-on intervention
3. They turned an obnoxious situation into a violent one, and got many people hurt in the process

The kids were blocking the street, assaulting the police, and refusing to disperse when ordered to (freedom to assemble isn't a blanket excuse to do whatever you want wherever you want). The police didn't respond with excessive force with the possible exception of the kids who were looking pretty beat up, and chasing kids down alleyways spraying them with pepper spray. Aside from those two issues, they did their job.

The issue could have been handled better before that point, the police could have controlled the situation better, and the organizers didn't get a permit.

There's no evidence any of that would have been a problem had the police not gotten involved.

They were illegally blocking the street.

It's obvious the kids were at fault here. Rioting because the cops try to clean up an illegal party is not the cops fault.

It's like staging a SWAT operation over a shoplifting.
What is the logic in enforcing a law in such a way that the cure is worse than the disease?

It's a bit different when we're talking about police officers called to the scene where people are being unlawful. If you don't understand that then maybe you should petition for a refund of your law school tuition.

I fail to see how this changes the analogy. At no point did the Mayo quote imply lawfulness. I'd say nice try, but it really wasn't.

Blame falls on both sides.

If they honked the horn or got on the megaphone, sure. Driving up to an incredibly loud, densely packed block party (that you knew was going on) and wondering why the street isn't completely clear for you within seconds of your arrival doesn't give you the green light to mace people/beat them up.

The article reports that there was a verbal warning.

Most people didn't hear it. They probably turned the lights on, and maybe even ran the siren for a blurp or two.

The emergency vehicle had their lights on and they said there was a verbal warning. The lights alone should suffice since it was dark and those lights are bright... a loud crowd can't drown that out. While you argue that the situation doesn't green light the cops to mace the group, the situation didn't green light assholes to dance in front of the vehicle or throw beer at the officers. Just keep in mind from what we can see in the video, no one got maced until after the crowd started attacking the police with bottles and cans... and just clap your hands and just clap your hands.

Yes.

Also, I think both sides share blame here. The cops were probably too aggressive in macing people/etc. The students were obviously being dumb and not listening to cop warnings and then throwing shit at them, which is a no-no.
