This thread.... totally died after page 3. Seriously, you guys know how to kill a really interesting topic. The whole thread has derailed horribly. Great job!

I'd join the navy if I had to pick one, because odds of dying are infinitesimal compared to ground action, I can get all manner of colorful STDs during shore leave, and I'd venture that the average seaman is smarter than the average marine. Plus, no matter how boring a carrier gets, at least I'm not in the desert eating bugs.

Also the buttsex.

Paddywack: considering your strongest contribution to this thread was whining that Akiina didn't like your "logic" you can go fuck a duck.

I've always thought boats and stuff were awesome. In C&C Red Alert i always played Allies because of the cruisers. They were badass. Loved WC2 as well. Wtb more boats and stuff in WoW which are actually used in combat and stuff.

Also the biggest threat seem to be Somalian Pirates. Hilariously awesome that such a thing exists in 2010.

If I were to do it again, I'd go Air Force. Although I hate siding with the pussies, they have high tech jobs which experience is in demand in the commercial sector, which translates to big money. Also, I'd think the Air Force is a bit safer than the Navy because everything seems to be unmanned now.

@ Jubber - Mayo's too progressive for the Marines... plus, from what I hear, he's probably too fat even for a waiver.

I never knew that people flying multimillion dollar pieces of equipment at over a hundred miles an hour and dropping bombs that kill dozens of people at a time is considered to be a "pussy".

It's a lot easier to do that then to be only a few yards from your opponent, on totally even ground, and deal with all the ugliness, uncertainty and physical discomfort the experience involves.

If it's a matter of choice, the army and marines are less preferred by those looking to avoid the unpleasant elements of war and the military lifestyle than the navy and airforce. That is all the proof that is needed that those departments are less demanding on one's physical courage.

That said, physical courage is cheap, and the real measure of a man is moral courage - which is very, very rare, especially in the military.

It's all relative, Mayo. Not everyone in the AF is sitting in an aircraft; in fact, most of them are sitting in some far-off base supporting the few pilots by maintaining the aircrafts, working with SIGINT/ELINT and flying UAVs, again, from some remote location. Another criticism of the Air Force is their living conditions are steps above the other branches on base, in training and often in the field. Hell, until this year, their PT was a joke.

They're the brains of the Armed Forces and the Army/Marines are the muscle, and the Navy is a nice mix of the two.

The Air Force was originally the Army Air Force. After the Korean War, it was split off into its own service. At that time, an edict was made to the effect that the Army is not allowed to own fixed-wing aircraft, and the Navy can own them only in conjunction with the specific vessels and installations they are assigned to.

Culture and bitter bureaucratic turf feuds amongst men in uniform mean that any dramatic change in organization is a dead letter at this point. Besides, the scope of the Air Force is far broader than just carrier-based fighters...it includes aerospace research, ICBMs, cargo planes, surveillance...it really doesn't make sense to unite it either with the conventional Army nor with the naval focus of the Navy. The status quo is basically fine. There just needs to be downsizing. A lot of it.

I don't believe Air Force pilots fly from carriers; those are Navy pilots.

I'm pretty sure the navy has its own air force and that air force is the second biggest in the world.

Guess which is #1.
