So what's a good program?

I know swimming is good but I value my space and privacy.

Swimming comment was directed to bane since he had an ACL injury.

I don't know as far as programs go. I've always kind of done my own thing, recently been wanting to tone up my stomach and abs so I can take obnoxious shirtless pics for Facebook with sunglasses indoors, etc.

Cardio. Are your knees okay? When I began running, I just ran a varied terrain course down my road and back. Lots of hills and winding turns, good running area...low traffic. I know you're in Boston, not familiar with how good the parks / running paths are.

If you are absolutely insistent on privacy, maybe look into a Tae Bo type workout video. That's still cardio, I cannot guarantee you won't feel like an idiot though. I know I would.

Working out would destroy my future as a mall santa.

That's my third career choice. After Lowes comes a three way tie with astronaut, professional rapper with Young Money Entertainment, and President of the United States. After the 3 way tie is mall Santa.

Aestu, while all of these are good tips for overall fitness, it seems you're wanting to have upper body strength and you're looking for hypertrophy. I can recommend a great book for you that can help you ectomorph. It's called Starting Strength. It will help you understand basic barbell exercises so you can avoid messing around too much in gyms (since they can be overwhelming). Also, your diet sucks for hypertrophy. You need three things: Oats, chicken, and broccoli. Anything else can be secondary since you enjoy it and it doesn't seem to be detrimental. Obviously water has a priority but V8 is good too and 100% fruit juices. No soda, candy, or chips as they are empty calories and it's best for your overall morale to assume these don't exist.

I used to be about 120lbs and I thought working out and gyms were for meatheads and highschool football jock asshats but then I got sucked into it by a friend and found out I honestly enjoy the process of setting goals and achieving them while making myself look better and feel better. Now I weigh 180 and look like a brick shit house. Once you establish a good base for yourself you can branch out from there, deciding what you'd like to do with your body. It's a good feeling. Check out that book, set some goals and ask me if you have any questions. I'm not certified or anything, but fitness is a hobby of mine and I know quite a bit.

I just noticed this lol. Most pre-workout supplements they sell give you near tunnel-vision amounts of focus. There could be naked dudes lifting on both sides of you and you'd have no idea. One time my gym had a fire alarm and I had no idea until someone physically tapped me on the shoulder, prompting me to take my headphone out and find out what he wanted.

I tried to make a hyperlink but I'm computer retarded.

That's okay. Fat people who can do pull-ups are probably a lot stronger than they look.

I got a C in upper-div Greek. I'm trying to get through Prophecies before Vanquishing and farming FoW. I haven't played FNV in a while but I always get the STR implant third.

I drink mostly seltzer and diet soda. I only drink regular Coke when I need it to treat migraines and help me relax. My father liked V8, to me it tastes like sludge. But I do like Prego, which is basically the same thing, I guess.

I do not like most candy, although I do have a weakness for Turkish Delights, which are 50/50 given they are made with real plant matter and not HFCS. I cannot eat chips - my palate is very sensitive to the abrasive texture due to a birth defect.

I do not eat chicken; I've been a vegetarian for over a decade. I love broccoli, particularly with sauce. I like oats. I don't think that will be a problem.

I enjoyed working out with a friend during my sophomore year of college. I never really got back into it - I do not enjoy activities that do not seem to have a "point".

Thanks for the extremely detailed, on-point advice. This is exactly what I wanted to know. I'll get the book and direct my questions to you!

Whenever there are fire alarms - here, at my apartment, or in the dorm - I always just ignore them and keep doing what I'm doing. I've never been bothered, if I were I'd just say I had my headphones on.

I don't like using chems, even legal ones, that alter perception.

I always eat and read at the same time, because I find both activities boring. Many people find this behavior strange, and I have never understood why. I can't imagine that it wouldn't seem perfectly natural to everyone to read while eating.

By the same token, I don't like working out because it seems incredibly boring.

What I want is to be able to somehow use my mind while I'm working out - as long as my mind is active, I don't get bored. I don't like music. I'm thinking of audiobooks or buying a music stand and putting printed pages on it. Ideas?

Thanks again for the great advice.

Also, I do like to bike, but Boston is not bike friendly, and I only like to bike if I'm going somewhere. I've been meaning to get around to sitting down and talking to Fanta about moving.

My experience has been entirely cardio-based (cycling), so I can't really offer any advice for muscle building.

I find this impossible to do. The point of exercise is to push your body beyond its normal comfort zone, and in the process, you will be focusing on what your body is going through more than any TV or audio book. If you find that you are able to follow a story or movie, you're probably slacking off (in my experience) and therefore not really making use of that time.

It's worth having other people weigh in on this. Gyms often have TVs with subtitles, some people play movies or television shows, or audio books. I find that most people simply listen to music because songs don't require any sort of concentration, but can be entertaining and motivating nonetheless.

My approach was to make playlists (or a giant playlist, and hit random) of music I knew would be motivating or fun to listen to, and then exercise outdoors (preferably) or in front of a TV with something I didn't care about paying attention to.

Losing weight is great, but expensive

Losing weight was very cost-saving for me due to my focused diet. Being athletic and -maintaining- weight is extremely expensive. While I was losing weight, I ate about 600-1000 calories a day (not for everyone, do at your own risk), so I spent probably $6 on food at most a day. When I reached my goal weight and continued to improve my cardio fitness, I woke up at 5 a.m. to literally shovel food into my face non-stop for an hour, just so my weight didn't crash into the sub-17 BMI range. Each approach is different obviously, and I strongly advocate people find what works for them or what they enjoy.

YEah i could do way more when i weighed 140lbs than now that i weigh what...210 or whatever. It's ok though, some people can't do any at al. So i'm glad i've worked my way up to SIX PULL UPS.

I'll be doing them one armed in no time.

That reminds me, i have a weighted vest that i need to steal some sand for.

Absolutely this. I have my ipod on and my headphones in and I enjoy the music I'm listening to, but I rarely hear it except for in between sets. I see a lot of cardio bunnies in the gym and they read books or fart around with their ipads while walking or jogging. There is a huge difference between going to the gym, jogging a bit/pushing out some reps, and actually working out. If you can pay attention to a book or the music you hear you're not exerting yourself to your full capacity.
