I'm still trying to figure out why a company who uses the slogan "Red Bull gives you wings!" would sponser a guy falling.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

That was rad. I was like D: when he went into his spin... thought I had just watched a man die, but then when he recovered, I was all like :D

I haven't been watching post-jump commentary. Did they say why he went into a spin and if it kept him from exceeding his max speed?

That picture needs to show Felix a split second after he jumped out. :D Also, did you guys hear on the pre-jump checklist to "turn on your cameras?" I hope like hell that he got some amazing POV footage.

There is almost zero air resistance up that high so you cannot maneuver your arms and legs into a position to stabilize yourself until you fall lower. Someone said the chute opened 16 seconds before a record free fall distance too. But I didn't watch past when it opened and mission control couldn't determine the way the wind was blowing for some reason.

Quote:
Felix Baumgartner hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph, according to preliminary data, and became the first man to reach supersonic speed without traveling in a jet or a spacecraft after hopping out of a capsule that had reached an altitude of 128,100 feet above the Earth.

I wonder if he deployed his parachute early, killing his chances for the "longest free fall record", because they didn't anticipate the speed he'd be traveling would be so great?

Parachutes are typically deployed at very low altitude.

I actually had this really nice copy of Paradise Lost with high quality Gustave Dore prints. It was formerly owned by a Mormon who travelled by land to CA in the 19th century. I bought it from his white trash descendant at a flea market. I think my parents threw it away. I really miss it.

If you were looking carefully, you probably noticed the artificial lights attached to the super-structure of the platform. There were more than a few of those, lighting the platform in such a way that the only noticeable shadow was by Baumgartner's feet.
