The Aztecs thought that dudes wearing horses were actually one horrible hybrid creature. Does that factor anywhere into this statement?

So the Europeans were genetically superior because the Chinese invented gunpowder?

I didn't say anything about genetics, considering they had what 99.9% similar genes?

culturally, we stomped their human-sacrificing non-wheel-inventing asses.

You try making gunpowder (or a rifle) without readily available metal and you let me know how it works out.

Sure, its called discovery.

We did it. Why couldn't they?

My point is that BECAUSE they didn't do these things(invent stuff, explore, PROGRESS) they didn't deserve to keep their lands.

We did it because (iirc) the Greeks did it first, probably because they found the stuff readily available and started mining for it when the stuff on the surface was depleted.


They did progress, though. They made highways and incredibly advanced cities with none of the tools (wheels, beasts of burden, metal anything) that our European ancestors had. Sure, they progressed in different ways, but to call these people barbaric shows little to no knowledge of their culture. They even had a working calendar and were astronomers.

I never said they were barbaric(although the human sacrifice thing tends to lead me in that direction) but they were complacent.

You said it was about evolution, which is genetics.




How were they complacent? The large empires of the time were successful and well equipped for the challenges they were facing. If aliens came to attack earth and they were only vulnerable to some obscure form of weaponry we haven't bothered inventing because it would be useless against other humans, would our defeat be due to complacency? You can only prepare for so much.

i read this science fiction story once where the earth had become united and started pursuing space exploration and had space stations, outposts, etc.

it was like a united federation of planets, lots of systems, lots of races and they were all under one banner. anyway, the interesting thing about this story was that the federation had a law that if you discovered a planet that did not have a technology to allow them to space travel (they didn't invent it on their own yet) then the federation made it illegal for any federation citizens to contact these species, or to land on their planet, so as not to disrupt their progress.

the case with the development of eastern culture vs. western culture is that the east has a considerably larger amount of connected land, therefore a considerably larger amount of connected peoples. each of those cultures were on their own path and because of their proximity, their paths intersected causing a quicker rate of progress. shared ideas and such.

western culture was extremely isolated (especially central american) and because of that, they may have been slower on the cultural evolutionary rate but they had some fantastic ideas. the mayans and aztecs had some very important contributions to society. ie clocks, irrigation, and medicine that predated mesopotamian culture.

im not sure what the argument is about, but i do know that only a fraction of central american people were eliminated by spanish gunfire, and the majority eliminated by the bubonic plague, typhoid, and smallpox.
