sweet potato > yam

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.

Quote:
The sweet potato was also grown before western exploration in Polynesia, where it is called the kumara, remarkably similar to the Quechua kumar in Peru.

Quote:
About 20,000 tonnes (20,000,000 kg) of sweet potatoes are produced annually in New Zealand, where sweet potato is known by its Māori name, kūmara. It was a staple food for Māori before European contact.[8]

Quote:
The sweet potato is only distantly related to the potato (Solanum tuberosum). The softer, orange variety is often called a yam in parts of North America, a practice intended to differentiate it from the firmer, white variety. The sweet potato is botanically very distinct from the other vegetable called a yam, which is native to Africa and Asia and belongs to the monocot family Dioscoreaceae. To prevent confusion, the United States Department of Agriculture requires that sweet potatoes labeled as "yams" also be labeled as "sweet potatoes".[1]

A rose by any other name...

Yams:US::Kumara:NZ

It just happens to be that yams, in your neck of the woods, are also a completely different food.

This is the asian yam:

This is what an american calls a yam:

although most of the time, it looks like these:
