When i was much younger i came up with a simple theory called the Lego Theory. Basically i used it as an explanation as to why so many people i knew (mostly girls) were thick as bricks. The common link was a Lego deprived childhood. I told this to my Dad and he was like YEAH THAT'S SO TRUE. So the theory became scientific fact and it was my job to spread the gospel.
Over the course of the following years whenever i'd meet one of Dad's friends or any random adult for that matter who had kids or was expecting a kid, Dad would say "have you heard my son's theory?". I would then explain the theory and the new father would then go purchase Lego for their child.

No doubt their kids are all rocket surgeons now.

LEGOs make a good childhood. No one can dispute that.

Television/DVDs are not babysitters/parents. It is proven that children playing will concentrate on play for a shorter time span, will complete play tasks less well (or not at all) and will use less imagination if a TV is on, even if the programming is not something that interests the children. If you play music at low volumes, it will contribute to an active mind, as well as introducing your son to a love of music. This is not to say that you should treat the TV as a disease; just don't depend on it too much for breaks.

Also, your kid will eat if he's hungry. No need to force-feed him.

Kiddos are resilient, just make sure that you give them each enough individual time to reinforce that you love them and that you're protecting them.

Since it's your first, sleep in shifts, you wont be able to do that with the second.

You'll probably get mad at your infant at some point (happened to me with the third), especially if the crying continues on past the first six months and you're really starting to feel the sleep deprivation. If that happens, just give them a new diaper and let them cry in crib for a 15 minute breather. Allow yourself to decompress, to get perspective, and then go back to your little one. It works.

Speaking of the first 6 months, if they're not sleeping through the night by then it's not an unreasonable time to consider sleep training (though cally wouldn't allow me to work with the kids until they were a year old).

Diapers are diapers. You'll sort it out, I promise, just don't be that guy that wont change a diaper, because it's <insert pansy ass comment here>. After the first few you'll be able to do it in the dark.

Read to your kid (something you enjoy, poetry with a nice cadence is also good), sing to your kid (doesn't matter, mine liked America the Beautiful, White Christmas, Silent Night and My Little Buttercup ala 3 Amigos) and talk to your kid (preferably not like a babbling idiot, but to each their own).

Don't neglect your spouse. Your relationship is the foundation for both your relationships with the children, so nurture it.

TLDR? just love the hell out of them and your wife, and fake it til you make it. When they get older, agree upon boundaries with the mrs and actually follow through, otherwise you'll end up with a pint sized terror like my sister in law (well... 4 in her case, but who's counting?).

I would contribute, but I'm still waiting to see if I did a good job with mine.

I'll have something for you in 8-10 years, hopefully.

Lil Jubb has made it to 10, you did fine. If you dont kill him at 18 than you win the game.

I read back through this today since it is my youngest daughters 6th birthday (she like princess stuff, just send it to me and she will get it, lol) and all of the advice is solid. Especially Weenas part about not eating it until its a few weeks old, newborns can be a bit chewy.

Oh, and yes Legos rule. I really wish I could find the set I had as a kid. My mom has some but not all of them. I could literally make a 4' by 4' city with pieces to spare. That was good times right there.

Every time you feel the urge to pick up some bullshit therapist know-it-all's 'Unabridged Encyclopedia of Parental Psychobabble', trust your OWN instincts, do it your OWN way and imagine what all the kids of every therapist you've ever encountered are like.

hahaha just wait til cally reads that, her sister is a nutjob psychobabblist and her kids are almost as loopy as their mother :D

i'm convinced the vast majority of people that get into that field do so out of a desire to self-diagnose.

Psycho babble pornstar?

Sounds like a character archetype in horror movies.

Hahaha. My views on therapy may be a bit biased, seeing as how I have bipolar disorder and I'm thoroughly convinced 90% of it is hokey bullshit designed to reel in guillible people to spend 100$ an hour to have some weirdo do nothing but tell you what you already know.

The majority of therapists are ill-prepared and poorly trained demonologists.

They're also a lot of fun to deflate at social gatherings.

Agreed, Tehra...though my Anger Management therapist is pretty damn cool, and has a way of making learning about the roots of emotion very interesting. I enjoy going in to see him, which is so not like me at all.

Edit: inb4 LOL REACT GOES TO ANGER MANAGEMENT ROFL
