My inner pessimist believes this undoubtedly true. Power does corrupt

My inner optimist would like to thank that it's not - I've held positions of relative authority (Resident Advisor, Crew Manager at a movie theatre, CFO for a small business) and haven't became a total fuckwit. In fact, I'm pretty nice I think! :D

I think it comes down to personality more than anything. When I worked at Wendy's, I had 3 cool managers. There was one though...his name was Greg...he was an absolute asshole who used his "power" to belittle everyone (especially the high school kids). I'll never forget how he flipped out at me one day because we ran out of napkins in the dining room. Just ripped me a new one right in front of the customers, like I'd just ruined the whole business. Really made me feel like shit at the time.

I think people who abuse power really are just insecure and so the power goes to their heads. Obviously I was smarter than Greg, I was actually going to college, and would be making much much more than he ever could hope to make in his dead-end, shitty fast food job (no offense to fast food workers). He was butthurt so he threw his "AUTHORITAH" around because it made him feel big.

Really, we should feel bad for these pathetic people.

I have a very good feeling that most of the people in this thread have had very little interaction with police aside from occasional tickets.

you may be right about most of the people in this thread.

i count like ten cops among my close friends, and half of them want me to join em. that probably explains my sympathies to them in general because of my friends in particular.

there's lost of problems with the justice system. the cops are fairly far down the list.

cops might be cool if the police state didn't exist and all

edit: ride-along's are quite an interesting experience tho
edit2: not that there's not good cops out there, it's just as sad when they swear to uphold laws and those that do the opposite by enforcing police state prohibition "drug wars", "speed traps" etc etc.

I've had three encounters with policemen. Two were positive, and I'm pretty sure the third was just trying to fill his quota for that month. It was no points and in a poorer municipality so I didn't bother to contest, because what's one $60 fine in 8 years of driving.

Do you think people who are evil or wrong have no friends?

How does their being your (or each others') friends prove they are morally correct and worthy of sympathy?

Aestu, clearly you have had little contact with police, and your overall distrust of anyone in power is coloring your perceptions.

I don't see how anyone can think America is a police state. Either you have little knowledge of those places that really are police states, or again you have very little experience of policing and the power of officers.

Pretty much all my involvements have been bad with the police. However I still think there are more good cops than bad cops and am glad we have them around.

you seem upset.jpg

Got pulled over today for a tail light out. I noticed it 2 days ago backing out of the garage since there is windows behind me and I work nights. Yesterday I drove past three cops and didn't get pulled over but two of them followed me but nothing beyond that. Today one stopped me, probably the the same one from yesterday one town over, took 3-4 minutes of my time. Any other interaction with police has been similar with headlight/tail light burned out or a flat tire. And once when two BOLTS on my tire broke off completely and I was in the middle of bumfuck nowhere without my phone and flashers on.

I lied, I did have to follow some cop to his car and put my hands on the hood while he checked my ID because I matched a description of some other derps screwing around breaking stuff while I was at the gas station. All of my encounters lasted 5 minutes or less except the flat tire and undrivable car encounter and everyone was courteous. I have no qualms about police here other than the ones who are driving 70-75 on the freeway (then ride your ass) when the limit is 55. But then again I'm doing 65 and they don't seem to care much.

When I was in high school, I was going 40 down a 35 road, hit some black ice, and did a literal barrel roll in my car, only to end up in a ditch. I called 911 and the cops came out. I landed on the driver's side of the car and asked repeatedly for help to get out of the car, which for whatever reason pissed the cop off and he didn't help me. I had to open my trunk from the inside (had a subaru forester) and crawled out in the freezing snow. The cop made me stand outside (while being soaked from the snow and having that damn flashlight right in my eyes the entire time) while he was yelling at me for flipping over and was accusing me of lying since he came the opposite direction I went and didn't hit black ice. I told him about it and he sent his partner the other way, only to watch him fall on his ass about 10-20 feet away from us.

I got a ticket for "Failure to Control a Vehicle" which the judge threw out as soon as we got to court and heard what happened.

I've also been pulled over (and ticketed) for going 71 in a 60 before.
