True but irrelevant. The fundamental reason mass transit and train travel won't work in America is American attitudes. Any initiative that might exist is stymied by the incredible difficulty in America of applying eminent domain for the building of train tracks and facilities. And even if that weren't true, it would still be a pipe dream, for the simple but all-overriding fact that many, if not most, Americans are fundamentally hostile to the very idea of mass transit and train travel.

I won't deny for an instant that's exactly what I'd do. It's worth it to not have to deal with the TSA and the extreme discomfort of air travel.

It's worth asking why air travel is cheaper, though, considering the vastly greater fuel, labor and infrastructure costs.

for major metropolitan areas, trains are just fine. especially with the amount of people who live in that area. out in the boonies though, let them keep their pickups.

too bad I'm in Sudbury and there is no train to Toronto that doesn't take twice as long as the bus.

from Toronto on I take the train because the cost is nearly equal, it's more comfortable, and I can have my laptop plugged.

edit: oh and viarail won't overbook without having a replacement readily available.

Greyhound overbooked - sorry catch the next bus... yea fuck you too.
