That's true, but I find it's more a function of people lapsing into cynicism and failing to live up to the ideal. You can easily justify any behavior by saying 'everyone else is doing it,' especially if everyone else really is doing it.

I saw more than a few of the kind of people you're talking about in the military, but I also saw the ones in the minority that took those ideals seriously. I can't believe you haven't met an academic somewhere along the line who lived up to those same ideals.
You can't build an organization if you're not preparing the people who serve under you to eventually take the next step toward your position. That's really what that ideal is about in the long run.

I'm not looking to justify anything. I simply appreciate the nature of the beast.

All human organizations seek to increase their power. When organizations outgrow or outlast their utility, they descend into radicalism and invent a mythos to justify their continued existence.

The military is no different than any of the many other organized hypocrises in this world - the Catholic Church, the affirmative action/feminism crowd, the Chinese Communist Party, etc - in that respect.

Cynicism is how the obsolete ideal is reconciled with the reality of the organized hypocrisy. It's a natural part of an organization's life cycle.

Interesting read, if for nothing else than how BBs bend over backwards to insist that it's the younger generation that are the bad guys.

http://www.sba.oakland.edu/faculty/schwartz/GMDecay.htm

More pragmatic but grossly overwritten (even by Aestu standards).

And yes I did pull these from Google. Still interesting and insightful, and applicable to many organizations in American life. Worth reading.

http://thecynicalgirl.com/

I Googled "cynicism organization" and came up with some pretty interesting results.

PokeWoW is boring, Googling is a fun way to multitask, the BBC has degenerated into shit and I can't sleep for worry. Bite me.

Anyway, people like that seem utterly unreal to me and it baffles me how they can get by in life. Actually, I find it very scary that people like that are at the wheel of too many organizations in America today.

Perspective is important. It doesn't matter if you can understand how they're getting along in life as long as they are getting along in life.

I was told once, "A good officer commands respect; a bad officer demands it." Which side will Aestu fall on?

Just kidding. I'm betting that he gets court-martial in the first two years.

Ok, LEGALLY.

Regardless, I think you wouldn't make it in the military. Good luck with that friendly fire.

So do you think that jerks, assholes, stupid people, obnoxious people, bad people, morons, people with no common sense, and social dropouts can't make it in the military? Or what are you getting at?

Last time I looked, most people who got fragged were gung-ho hardcore types, not nerds with BAs. Never mind that should I join after getting a MA (or before) I'd probably be further from live fire than the guy at your local 7-11.

But I would still get to wear a costume and demand discounts wherever I go.
And get three free lunches every day.

I don't want to be on welfare either, but I have no real long-term plans after finishing my MA and I would just as soon pass the debt on to hapless taxpayers.

Well, that's a damn shame, because you're exactly the kind of person the military needs.

Oh? Idk if that was sarcasm, but what makes you say that? Just curious, though it's not like my mum would let me even if I did want to. And no, being over 18 doesn't mean I can go against mum lol

He'll probably insult you for paying his theoretical paycheck.

Oh wait, he already did.
