Read the bible, do a psychological profile of this god, and you will find out that he is worse than all serial killers combined.

Plus Hitler.

-Jealous and proud
-Petty and unjust
-Unforgiving control freak
-Ethnic cleanser
-Misogynistic
-Homophobic
-Racist
-Megalomaniac
-Filicidal
And more.

Millions killed (there is a full table of all deaths attributed to him around), all in the name of himself.

He's a caricature of a man who would come across that kind of power. Invented by Iron Age animals to justify their atrocities, and used by charlatans to form an organized religion.

Today, religion is sought after for comfort from a world devastated by religion.

The words Dawkins used that struck me about God was "jealous and proud of it". That's a problem I always had growing up. I was taught jealousy was a bad thing, and then we were supposed to be happy God was a "jealous God".

Also, does God's apparent jealousy suggest there are other gods you can cheat on him with? I don't mean false gods, because that's like getting jealous if your girlfriend has a vibrator. I mean real ones.

What could an omnipotent being be jealous of? If there is more than one, they would be more than intelligent enough not to resort to petty violence and territory domination on a minuscule speck in a vast cosmos by speaking through primates who barely started to think.

It's too bad that we aren't born with an extra reserve of skepticism juice (quite the contrary in fact). A promise by a large organization that your life is under a deity's protection and of eternal life sounds appealing to anyone who is up for grabs.

This is probably why the more recent fundamentalists discourage thinking and asking questions.

Chauvinistic and irrelevant; the Bible is a great work of literature. It is a deeply human story.

It's a collection of historic accounts (probably) written by peoples and taken by organized religion as the absolute word of god.

The problem with what this involves is not to be understated, the quality of the work is irrelevant in the argument against dogmatic organized religion.

The Bible does not pretend to be the absolute word of God. It is merely a story. We don't write off the Homeric epics or the Epic of Gilgamesh because they attribute deeds to the gods.

You're right that it doesn't, it wasn't brought up in this thread (only it's description of characters in question), and it's exactly the point, no? Fundamentalists following it to the dot.

Actually, it doesn't pretend, it says.

2 Timothy 16 and 17:
Quote:
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Is just one example. You can say the scripture doesn't make any compelling claims as to being the absolute word of God, and I would agree, but the scripture very much makes claims as to such.

So, can someone explain how Dawkins can deny there is a God but then entertain the idea that there was some other creator in the universe that kinda created us? Couldn't that creator be the God which theists worship?

It's funny how atheists try to "convert" believers into atheism.

there's plenty of parallels here.

He's talking about the idea that aliens seeded the earth with the earliest form of life. This wouldn't be a divine creator, and somewhere evolution and natural processes would have been responsible for the universe's first form of life.

Perhaps this is chicken and egg, but what created the aliens that seeded earth's earliest form of life?

Okay...they evolved or something...then what STARTED the first natural processes that lead to life.

It is my belief that something had to tip the first domino. It didn't just randomly fall one day.

IIRC I'm pretty sure there was a theory that a comet crashed into the ocean that carried the materials required for life, which is what kick started everything.
