This might very well be true. It also might be true that having a "boogie man" OUT THERE SOMEWHERE could be the fear card that always seems to be a hole card for most governments. There always seems to be one, doesn't there?

...funny how that seems to work, isn't it? You have a devious and insightful mind, Mr. Dooj.

Honestly, though, I think a lot of Americans with the "press 2 for burrito" have-it-now attitude don't realize you can't hit a magic button and know where someone is, especially if they really don't want to be found. There are still a lot of places in the world a person can hide, and America isn't very popular in a lot of them. There has also been...a lack of will, for want of a better term, among our nation's leaders in dealing with a lot of issues. A lot of the things we can do, we don't do, not because it's so wrong that we never did it in the past, but because despite having done it in the past, we can't do it now because there are fucking cameras everywhere. Political fallout scares world leaders more than military failures.

Jubber

immediate thoughts:
1) redacted or not, the information is now in the wild and individuals that could be killed for what they are doing will have to find a way to gtfo and fast.
2) every government that's involved with another government does so for selfish reasons that go well beyond offending someone's tender sympathies
3) it's interesting to see how much ambassadors are used as part of information gathering programs, when I thought they were more ceremonial in nature, gifts to connected friends
4) considering their value as information gatherers, this documents putting everyone on blast are going to make the international gossip girls less likely to dish the dirt, which is unfortunate.
5) NKorea learning that their bff has been prepping to cut them loose may make them dangerous

From what i've read, it all sounds very reasonable, even the things they would object to. Now, from what i've seen of North Korea on that natgeo episode, that'll be some growing pains putting those sheltered people in position to be open to the world.

Whose lives?

If your population knew you tortured civilians in countries you were invading in order to extract intelligence from them how would they view you? And don't give me this we are fighting a war because of 911, because I call bullshit. Maybe initially but not now.

You're calling it "bullshit" because it invalidates the assumptions behind your viewpoint. No, the wars we're waging now aren't the necessary result of 9/11, and torture is not an effective means of extracting information, never has been.

Would it matter if I said it was the Pope's life or the Presidents or a bum? Or a school teacher?

Who determines what lives are more valuable?

You are mistaking my point. I disagree with the war and the torturing of civilians or militants alike.

I think it's quaint that you don't think people couldn't just be offed, regardless of their location, if the right people decided they should be.

You know bupkiss about how the shady parts of the world work.

And do you?

Who are these "right people" and who should be "offed" and based on what criteria? Are you sure you're pro-democracy or only when it serves your views?

I do know, not that I'm going to allow you to tangent this off on a three-day bender about the various transgressions of my youth.

I'm not pro-democracy. Democracy is two wolves and sheep voting on what's for dinner. We live in a Constitutional Republic. There's a huge difference. Go learn it. Brush up on the basics of American governance while you're at it, since it appears you aren't familiar with the subject. There should be plenty of time for that while you're hiding in your Ivory Tower deluding yourself into thinking that you have some idea what happens outside the confines of personal microcosm.

Jubber

Okay, God, I guess we'll just listen to you since you know everything. Oh btw that was sarcasm but you probably already knew that since you know everything (sarcasm again).

What was your point in this clearly unhelpful and uninformative post again?

Don't be hard on the lad, apparently a college education makes you blind to the obvious.
