Complaining about offensive material in a Duke Nukem game is like complaining that water is wet. Yes it's going to be offensive, that's the point. It's better to save your indignation for something that's offensive and actually influential.

Yes, criticizing someone for drawing the line at a different place than you is silly, but so's not grasping the fact that her line is arbitrary.

Unless she didn't think that the "joke" on 30 rock was about rape, that it was about a man being able to do that to his wife without question, you know, being a hypocrite about misogyny as well.

Wonderful Catch-22 that makes.

Zaryi's line may or may not be arbitrary (I can't see the clip you're trying to link from Canada), but she was pointing out that some people may find rape-related humour offensive. There's nothing incorrect about that, and not everyone who holds that point of view is hypocritical.

The original question here was people wondering what people were finding offensive about the game and Zaryi pointing out a specific scene that many people would find offensive. I don't think anyone came in here shocked - shocked! - that there was offensive material in a Duke game.

But we've had this discussion before. Fantasy is fantasy.

Not all fantasy is necessarily tasteful. I think most people would be adverse to playing a pedophilia simulator or an Auschwitz guard RPG, as extreme examples, even if they are "fantasy". People draw the line at different places, and I think criticizing someone for drawing the line at a different place than you is silly.

I'm not criticizing her for drawing the line in a different place than I do, I'm criticizing her for drawing a line at all. When I said fantasy is fantasy, I meant it without fine print.

So you think people should never be offended by anything ever, as long as it's in the context of a video game? What's wrong with having moral standards?

I suspect most of the people who find Duke offensive didn't buy the game.

I think people should never be offended by anything ever so long as it's entertainment created without actually harming the participants. When you have the option not to watch/play/consume the entertainment, you have no right to be outraged. Moral standards apply to reality.

If people aren't allowed to be offended by content, what would lead them to choose to not consume that content? I don't think anyone here is arguing that nobody should play things that some people find offensive, but your original argument was that nothing can actually be offensive. If that's the case, the choice to not consume content is meaningless, because nobody who applies your standards will find anything unworthy of consumption.

My argument was that entertainment produced without causing harm cannot be offensive, because it is incapable of creating actual harm and as such cannot produce offense. Just because I find it silly and a little bonerkilling (and hence wouldn't be able to share in the fetish) that some people fap/schlick while wearing fur suits or dripping hot wax onto each other (that's perhaps a poor example as there's technically some harm, albeit consensual) doesn't mean I'm offended. I may not find appealing the idea of videogame strippers exploding into showers of gore once they get chestbursted, but I'm not offended because I'm not harmed.

The bit about not consuming content was an added precaution for those who refuse to accept entertainment as inoffensive, or so I'd like to add as an afterthought.

Your argument rests on redefining the word "offensive". If you said that video games that involve raping virtual characters don't cause harm to any actual people, then I would have agreed with you, but the point is trivial and nobody here was arguing the opposite. Some people find certain kinds of content to be unappealing or repulsive (ie. offensive, as the word is normally understood), and you don't seem to disagree with them.

Why? Surely part of discussing a game's content is mentioning if you found some of it offensive.

Being offended by video game A because of a rape joke and liking TV show B even though it has rape jokes.

I think it's also a little unbalanced to complain that someone said something that "a lot of people would find offensive" after some of the comments made here about, for example, people's religious beliefs, that "a lot of people would find offensive." Either there are no sacred cows, or you show the same respect for everyone else's that you expect to be shown for your own.
