Star Ocean games were pretty ground breaking for their time in terms of decisions affecting outcomes.

Loved those games. So fun.

Star Ocean 2 is still completely and absolutely unsurpassed in that respect.

FNV comes close but it doesn't have the diversity, randomness, mutually exclusive choices, abundance of events and elegant interplay between different elements (such as combat, professions and itemization) that SO2 did.

Not to mention absolutely brilliant dialogue and delivery.
Nothing in any other game I've seen even comes close to the Love Potion or Cooking God events.

EDIT: Second thought, FNV doesn't even come close.

I love that game. Rented the PSP port just for shits and giggles. Completely forgot how hard the last boss, Gabriel?, was if you unlocked his potential.

Or you could just cheese it with Bloody Armor.

The really awful one was Gabriel Celesta on Universe Mode. 100M HP with a 10k damage cap = 15-hour encounter.

Once I wiped at 100k. I think that was the worst moment in my entire video gaming experience.

Was his name Gabriel though? The last boss?
I think moving and casting made it 10 billion times harder than Celesta, which was the bonus boss you got after completing that dungeon right?

Witcher 1 is terrible.

As Tuhl likes to put it, handles like a swamp.

2 is required play.

Baldur's Gate 1/2/ToB are worth checking out if you're serious about getting into RPG mode. And Temple of Elemental Evil if you want to be a turbonerd and play the truest D&D conversion of all time.

Neverwinter Nights is more approachable and still pro.

I can't remember how old I was when it came out.
