Public education in its present form is not so much about education as it is suppressing individual thought, ostracizing children who stand out, mass producing citizens and letting everyone else slip through the cracks.

"its" = possessive of "it"
"it's" = contraction of "it" and "is"

"the educational system" is understood to possess "present form".
The main verb of the sentence is "is [not...about]".

The former is correct.

I fear that the system is so heavily embedded into the way modern society functions that to do the correct thing and completely overhaul it would be impossible. Which is a real shame when we sit here today and blame caregivers i mean teachers for being unable to force square pegs into round holes.

I was incredibly relieved to hear that just a day or two ago the people managed to force our government into rethinking their budget cuts which would have increased class sizes. While i don't have any faith that the world will realise the inherent faults of the system and seek to completely revamp how children are babysat i mean educated, at least they won't be fucking it up even more in the short term.

I'm pretty sure there's some solid anti-trust laws against collusion and price fixing, actually.

Laws are only as good as their enforcement.

People like saying this, but I'm not convinced any of them actually went to public school. Public education in its present form cannot be adequately generalized.

And if an institution put in place to mass produce citizens isn't mass producing citizens, it is doing something wrong.

My main problem with public education is that they send the smart kids halfway across the city to a shit school in the ghetto so that the smart kids bring up the average test grades to keep funding going to the shit schools.

I had a 45 minute bus ride every day.

EDIT: Bad students can still make strong workers in manual labor, trades, etc. Telling every kid that they can be the next president or CEO or genius inventor or whatever is folly.

Yes. All of it. This^^

Guess what shitheads, not everyone gets to be a damn astronaut. Join the Air Force, work your way up, become the best of the best, fly prototypes and don't die, maintain your vision and then MAYBE you can dream about being a fucking astronaut. And fuck off if you have the slightest thing wrong with you.

The first paragraph is a fine example at the micro level of what is wrong with our society. Rather than address the issues that need to be addressed, we give the illusion of having addressed them.

"This is what these people really believe"

I actually had a copy stored on my HD before this thread. I've met a surprising number of teachers and professors who actually believe this shit (and tell me straight up that I consequently need to work harder than other people for the same grades). These same people are baffled and offended when I express nothing but contempt for the educational system.

my favorite quote so far out of this debacle actually comes from my sister's father-in-law. while having a conversation with him, post-election he says, "man, you know. those teachers. they sure are riding the gravy train. i'm glad Walker is still here to keep them in check."

allofmywat.

good thing we have these republicans to help weed out those freeloading public service workers. there's no way we could benefit from more fireman, policeman, or teachers.

do republicans actually believe this stuff? it seems astounding to me.

Verily, I have often laughed at weaklings who thought themselves proud because they had no claws.

We love teachers for what they do, but they are also infinitely replacable.

Until you take away all of their benefits that they've spent decades getting and nobody wants to become a teacher and society literally evaporates.

How about this...

Teachers can keep their benefits that they've earned as long as they can be fired, regardless of tenure, if their performance isn't worth keeping (such as low classroom scores, too many issues, etc.) or if there is an equally capable teacher who can be hired for less. Teachers are paid with tax dollars and I think the tax payers deserve a competitiveness to the quality and cost of education to help keep costs low and quality high.

Everyone wins, right?
