I pride myself on having viewpoints that are subject to change. As I am presented with new information, I like to re-evaluate how I feel about things.

Brief history...I was a HARDCORE Jubber-Usdk-esque conservative when I was in High School. I LOVED Dubya (yes I'm ashamed, but it is what it is). I remember arguing to no end with my liberal girlfriend at the time about why we should invade Iraq. I of course voted for him in 2004. One reason why I think 18 year olds are still too stupid to be able to vote....but that's neither here nor there.

In college, I became quite liberal. As the ills of the Bush administration were shown to me, as I discovered things like Cannabis and Bob Dylan, I became a bit of an angry hippie.

Now, I am more libertarian...seeing the evils of both sides. Seeing the stupidity of both sides...and falling one way or the other on an issue based solely on the facts I have and my personal viewpoint...no hidden agenda or asinine party-loyalty drives me any longer.

--------------------------------------
Present Day:

I consider myself very moderate overall. I hate Bush, think Obama hasn't done a very amazing job...but I pretty much think we're fucked no matter who is in office (insert Aestu's nihilism quote here)

On social issues I can go either way but tend to lean left.

Fiscally, I agree with a lot of the right's viewpoints. As someone who works hard and makes money - I get angry when I see how much me and my business are taxed. When i realize that these taxes go out to pay:

1. Wars I don't care about and that we shouldn't be in
2. Entitlement programs

It raises my blood pressure. Do i think we should help people who cannot help themselves? Yes. In that way, i think there is a definite need for things like Welfare and things LIKE social security (notice I said "like" meaning...the current Social Security system is FUBAR). The problem is how these things are implemented.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TL,DR

So what has your political journey been? I'll be surprised if anyone else has been wildly right, swung left, and ended up in the middle like I have. Have your views always been the same?

I never swung far left, but I was a right wing nutjob for most of college. I hang out in the middle largely disgusted with both sides now.

I used to be heavily leftist. I mean like bordering socialist, if not outright socialist. Now my political compass test when I take it reflects being near dead center, up two positions from dead center and over one, to the left.

I believe that being open to changing your thoughts and feelings and stances on issues is healthy, to be staunchly firm in your beliefs without the ability to evaluate multiple points of view and outcomes of different scenarios is definitely negative.

At present, I am in favor of effective government, not minimalist libertarianism or broad reaching socialism. I think like everything, moderation is key. If we had a staunchly libertarian government, I believe the world would be less safe, as would our own streets. On the other hand, the larger and out of control our government gets, the more say it has in issues that it should have no business in. I strongly dislike the thought of our government continuing it's path of becoming an excessively interventionist nanny state where everything someone does 'offends' someone or some entity, and somehow everyone is responsible for everyone elses business and problems.

I went from not caring or knowing until about 20.

Straight into Libertarian. I've gotten good ideas of other lines of thought. But there is one thing I've inherently known since being a kid. I value freedom. I hated being forced to do anything. I think our government's only role is to protect it's people from illegitimate force and fraud.

There's nothing I hate more then when someone attempts to force others to do what they think is right. These are what we call, moral crusaders, and they like to trade other people's liberties for morality. Whether it's in the form of banning prostitution, making drugs illicit, pushing evolution out of schools, throwing more money at schools, or funding the destitute through taxes.

I don't have a problem with anyone being anything, as long as they aren't impeding someone else's rights.

It may not be right to:
be racist
be sexist
discriminate in who can be on your property
smoke
drink
get high
fuck for money
carry weapons
hoard your money
be lazy
be fat
be gay

But you have every right to be or do anything that doesn't trample another person's rights.

The second thing I hate the most is when the fed tramples state's rights.

I don't see how choosing the open-minded option makes me close-minded to the close-minded option.

I wasn't referring to your political leanings but your 'never going to change' comment. If you're going to think yourself better than someone or something, don't be what you are accusing them of being. But I know you're smarter than that so ill just act like you were joking about that part.

Treating your friends with courtesy and respect even when they're being dill-holes isn't a cop-out, it's being a pal.
