Ok, I can understand the goons at fox news and their inability to understand mass effect. they aren't involved with the video game industry so obviously they're going to get some shit wrong. The Escapist, however, is an entertainment/movies/video games website, well known for people like say Yahtzee Croshaw and his Zero Punctuation stuff.

So in an article specifically about video games and its treatment/depiction etc of women ( http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_235/6978-Vaginophobia )
how can they fuck up something like this?
Quote:
In Gears of War 2, Dom kills his wife in an alien prison because she would be a burden. One chapter prior to this event, two characters, one of which is the player, are forced to carry a box of explosives in tandem down a hallway, slowing their movement and limiting their aim. Dom's wife gets a cut scene, but she is given less gameplay impact than a trunk filled with explosives.

Maybe I'm the only one that remembers it this way, but didn't that limp dick Dom find his wife in one of those metal coffins and she was already dead?

They also put in the statistic that "more women over the age of 18 play video games than boys under the age of 18." Does this seem like an odd statistic to anyone else?

I feel like the author is overly scornful towards men who play/design video games for some reason, and seems to miss the point. Obviously if the majority of people who MAKE and BUY video games are men, then the majority of games that are going to come out will cater to men. I feel that trying to make things "more accessible" to everyone outside of your core demographic will just make it LESS accessible to that first demographic that has made you so much money. It's probably why there will never be a Barbie Dream House map on any Call of Duty game.

And Gears of War 2 is a WAR game. The explosives ARE more god damned important.

I don't really see the problem. But I don't think fantasy (term applied to the non-real, in this case entertainment) should have barriers.

Chicks are a burden in video games.

Do you know how many times Zaryi shot me in L4D?

Zing!

I just feel like if you're going to use an example of X to prove point Y, make sure you get example X right.

IIRC she was like half an inch from death, crazy starved dying, no hope so they put her out of her misery type of thing.

I just watched it again, it doesn't show him kill her, but yeah its heavily implied. Weird how I don't remember it that way at all.

Still, I feel like it was more of a mercy killing than killing her because she was a burden. If i ever end up like that i hope someone puts me down.
