More players suspended from Ohio State for being, overpaid at there summer jobs.....is this a damn joke.

Like this makes no sense to me at all. These players MAKE MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS of dollars for the NCAA and the universities, and if they get even the slightest benefit from it there suspended?

The offenses are legitimate abuses. It's bad for the team and for the game when players leverage their reputation to get free stuff. There's the risk of quid pro quo, match throwing, conflict of interest and questionable exposure.

The game has a lot of problems - definitely - but it can, in fact, get worse.

As an Ohio State alum, these "violations" have just gotten ridiculous.

The problem is that the NCAA is a sham. They only "investigate" issues when the media (ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo Sports) gets some journalist to write about some perceived violation. The public then cries foul, and the NCAA gives them exactly what they want to make it seem like they are somehow an effective organization.

They've done a study and the average high profile athlete is worth in excess of $100,000 a year based on the revenue they drive for the university. Do you think Pryor saw a dime of all the #2 jerseys that were sold during his time at Ohio State?

The NCAA wants it both ways. They try to pretend that these "student athletes" are just good kids going to school to learn while playing on the football team. In reality, they are basically professionals, whether people want to admit it or not. This whole professional/amateur dance is silly.

Ohio State is just fulfilling the scapegoat role that the NCAA needs in order to seem legitimate. Take down a winning program and everyone will champion them as rooting out corruption in college athletics. The irony is that the real corruption lies within the NCAA, the BCS, and every organization that perpetuates the student athlete integrity facade.

I don't care what college team you cheer for, if you think your school is clean and following every single NCAA rule to the letter of the law...you are fooling yourself. Every program has loads of violations that go unreported. The only difference is they haven't been caught...that or some hack journalist hasn't decided to make a name for himself by dragging the program through the mud yet.

What I think is that he signed a contract removing his right to royalties, so that's really his own damn fault.

And what if they expect something in exchange? How can you really know?

Azelma, the reason THIS issue gets actioned is because the association and its colleges feel they directly stand to lose $$$. That other issues get ignored (and that the screwed up ways money, basketball and college interact is itself a major driving force in the problems) doesn't change the fact that this decision, in itself, was correct.

Agreed. And believe me, I'm not crying over student athletes. I'm just saying, they are stars who drive the kind of revenue that professionals do, and so we shouldn't be surprised when they get the same "benefits" that the pros do. The NCAA's stern refusal to accept this fact is disingenuous at best.
