So, the neighborguy's kid came over while I was cooking and asked, "You're good with computers, right?" I said, "I guess I know enough." He said, "My optical drive stopped working. It'll try to read the disc for about ten seconds, make a clicking, then eject the disc." I said, "Cool. I've got a bunch of old parts in my garage that I'll never use. I can swap one of them for you." He says, "It's a laptop." I say, "Well, that makes things a bit more difficult because laptops are sometimes a pain in the ass to take apart... and you need to make sure you get the right drive because... it's a laptop." Then he says, "It's a Mac"

Whhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

So... I know the thing is about three years old and he said he has to install the OS (for whatever reason) so he needs his optical drive.

1) What the fuck do I do with a Mac?
2) MacStore?
3) Can he download the OS, store it on an external HD, then install from it?
4) If I take apart the case am I going to find some stupid Mac shit (like an optical drive fully encased in something that can't be opened) and will this, somehow, fuck up his computer?

I don't know the answer to your question, but my psychic powers are telling me what the theme of this thread will be.

buy an external optical drive, unless he has applecare.

doing the hd image install still needs a mac to "format" the dmg onto a partition, unless you want to start digging up those tools too. i installed lion with the latter method because it's a dual layer image.

internally, you need to buy the replacement drive for the model unit he has. it's as "standard" as laptop optical drives go.

Just hook an external drive to it and run it from there.

OR DID THE GREAT MESSIAH STEVE MOTHERFUCKING JOBS NOT THINK TO SUPPORT THAT BASIC FUCKING WORK-AROUND BEFORE HE ASCENDED TO THE HEAVENS????

In an effort to not derail this thread

It might have some amazingly retarded torx screws with a pin in the middle making it impossible to remove with a standard set unless you have a drill and want to potentially ruin the torx bit. Maybe you can buy them now. Otherwise swapping optical drives depends entirely on how much of the back panel you can remove or feel safe removing. On most laptops I have disassembled to remove dust, the optical is not immediately available to remove. I do know that Mac OS does not work with all hardware (CPU/Mobo specifically) so you need to research and see if optical drives are in the same boat. Not having an optical drive should have no effect on it if you can get an OS up and running.

With that said, I would hope they finally added USB booting but his mobo might not support it.

I used a mac once or twice before... my wife had one in college.

I bought her a PC as soon as I could.
