Spy planes don't fire any weapons. They leisurely aim cameras with wide fields of view.

It's like comparing the precision and reaction times of getting your cock into a an oiled up, tweeked out Navi to pissing on the ground within the next week.

spy planes dont, but there are UAV's that fire weapons.

which, btw, are pretty awesome to see.

There's UAVs with eyes and there's UAVs with teeth.

Neither the U2 nor the SR71 (classic "spy planes") had weapon systems, they were purely recon oriented. Fortunately the modern USAF realized single-role planes were a generally stupid idea and now we have multi-role aircraft like the F22 Raptor which can perform intel gathering as well as attack roles when UAVs either are unable to be used or don't fit the job.

F22s can't launch from carrier decks. It's not efficient at subsonic speeds. It has an exorbitant operational cost. And its cruising altitude is a fraction of that of the U2 or SR71.

Why would anyone ever use an F-22 to gather intel when they could scope it out with a spy satelite or use a light spyplane for a tenth the fuel and operational cost and many times the sensor payload?

If you could read, you'd already know it's because a) using it to fill more than one role is cost-effective, and b) there are times when you can't use a UAV but you can put an F22 in the air.

a) the F-22 program was axed precisely because it wasn't cost-effective, even less so since fighters have an inherently exorbitant unit and deployment cost. A fleet of drones costs less than a single F-22 ($10m ea vs $150m ea, to be exact).

b) uh, when would that be? Pretty sure you don't need nearly as long a runway or as many personnel to send up an unmanned craft that weighs a fraction as much, uses a fraction the fuel, and without any of the complex propulsion and life support systems of any manned fighter craft.

Actually it was the JSF which was cancelled, the F22 is active and in service now. Also the weapons load-out of UAVs tends to be lacking compared to most of our current lineup of aircraft, and I don't recall any UAVs being armed with guns for running CAS operations in support of ground forces, hence why there are times when its better to send up a manned conventional aircraft which can recon a target, drop a few bombs then scoot over to a different area of operations to lay down fire in a close air support capacity.

Is a spy plane still a spy plane if it has weapons?

Actually, that's kinda silly. The Spy has a revolver and a knife and he's still a spy.

Active, but further production was stopped.

Is there any reason in principle these craft can't be armed with cannons? Even assuming they can't, it's not a binary choice between a tin can drone and a gold-plated F22.

If you want cannons, a Warthog (or something like that) is the way to go.

Economics. If you buy ten drones instead of one F22, there's no need to "scoot" over.

Having an F22 recon reduces its operational effectiveness due to opportunity cost. That's flight and fuel time not spent blowing things up.
