Somehow I missed this thread for a bit.
So, for free games
http://www.firstrowsports.tv works, they yank the feeds from NHL's Gamecenter Live service. The size isn't that great, but if you're looking for free it's reliable.

If you really like hockey and don't live in the market of the team you want to watch, it works pretty well. Local games and national channels (nbc, vs, nhln) are blacked out, but you can get around that easily enough. Fullscreen on my monitor looks better than a tv channel (though not as good as HD). It's not very cheap though, so it's best if you plan on watching a lot of games.
