Background: Two weeks ago I completely stopped smoking mary jane because of panic attacks while high. Basically I was finding myself convinced I was gonna have a heart attack and die almost every time I smoked a decent amount.

Background to the background: My family has a history of heart issues. My dad had his first heart attack at age 37, and again in his mid 40s (which resulted in him getting bypass surgery). My grandfather had a heart attack in his 40s as well and actually was one of first people to get bypass surgery in the 70s when it was still very new. My uncle had a stroke at age 45ish, dad is on all kinds of meds for high blood pressure etc etc.

Bottom line, it's something that I am very concerned about in general. I try to lead a healthy-ish life, but the fact is...I sit at a desk 8 hours a day, I play too many video games, don't really exercise (am gonna change this by hopefully getting a rowing machine and starting to use it 30 min a day). I don't smoke tobacco (nor weed...anymore), try to limit stress, I masturbate frequently (that's a form of cardio...no?), etc etc.
--------------------------------------

Well, it's 3:08AM, and I just woke up randomly, with what I'm convinced was a "weird feeling" in my esophagus, like heart burn...but not really. I started to freak myself out like "oh man, what If i'm having a heart attack and I don't even know it" so I do my classic move (how I deal with having these panic attack-ish worries) of take two bayer (aspirin) and try to calm myself down (I guess I think "oh, If it is a heart attack, then I'm saving myself...if it's not, then hey I just took two aspirin, no big deal").

Obviously I'm fine right now, no pain, completely lucid. Breathing normally.

Anywho, I'm starting to think I have a mental issue....because if this is happening when I'm 150% sober then that's not a good thing, right? Just scary that I randomly jerk awake feeling funny for no apparent reason and jump to the immediate conclusion of "maybe I'm having a heart attack and don't know it"

Is the solution simply that i need to go to a doctor to pay a ton of money to have them look all thru me and tell me I'm not all clogged up and to stop being so panicky about it?

I should also stop reading these horror stories of random healthy athletes straight up dying and stuff because of undiagnosed heart problems....

Anyone else have irrational fears that are based somewhat rationally?

TL,DR: Not sure what I want you guys to tell me here, do I sound bat shit crazy?

P.S. At the end of the day, when I think about it...I think I'm just terrified of death. Maybe that's what this is all about. I guess I feel like if I die now, there is so much left undone in my life...so many experiences I'll wish I had, things I wish I'd done. In a sense...I think it's my deepest fear, and it's just manifesting itself in the form of "OMG am I having a heart attack?"

Plug in your symptoms at an online checker is my advice. Always trust your body, it is right 99% of the time when it's telling you something is wrong. Mentally is a different story, but if your body is physically exhibiting signs of something being not all right, you need to see a doctor.

I get some anxiety about my own health as well. The medication I take for bipolar disorder can have physical effects as well in some ways. I'm always worrying about my back problems. How the fuck do I know if I have a herniated disc or bulged disc if I'm not a medical expert and have never had one?

TMI Medical shit within, you've been warned.
Spoiler (highlight to view):
My medication makes it extremely difficult to cum during sex. It can also result in gastrointestinal complications and really bad headaches. I'm not sure what a migraine feels like since I've never been diagnosed with one, so how the fuck would I know? The difficulty ejaculating thing is both a blessing and a curse.

Look at it this way: your family has a history of surviving heart attacks.

What kind of discomfort? I mean, are you waking up gasping for air or are you just freaking yourself out awake?

My advice (not to try and sound like a doctor when I am not one yet) is really just to go see a doctor. I would not wait, it's just not worth it in case it is something. I say this because that is what my father did - waited when he had pains on his left side and just took an aspirin - and it resulted in his death from a heart attack later that day. And his wife was (still is) a doctor! So if even he didn't know what was going on, I wouldn't expect you to. I know a lot of people think "man, it's gonna cost a lot, doctors think they know everything, etc" but getting a quick, routine physical when you're feeling out-of-sorts (called "malaise") is a good idea and could possibly save your life.

Just my two cents, I don't mean to feed your anxiety. Even though there is sometimes a disconnect between mind and body, anxiety is a common method for your body to tell you "Hey, you, YES YOU, get me fixed, you fucking asshole!"

All the best, let me know how it goes should you decide to take my advice. And, if you ever need to talk, I'm told I'm a good listener.

Yeah yeah, no curbside consults and all that. Legit though, are you sure it isn't heartburn? Have you been eating/drinking shortly before bed or anything? Like within an hour or two?

I'm actually not sure it isn't heartburn anymore. I was googling around about nighttime indigestion.

http://myheartsisters.org/2009/06/12/heartburn/

Only thing is, I had dinner at about 8:15PM, and a glass of red wine (i've read that red wine can cause acid reflux). I drank a ton of water just before bed...it wasn't till about 2:30-3AM when I woke up feeling funny. Is that too long of a time lapse to make it indigestion?

Anyway, so then I took the two bayer, ate a banana, drank some water, made this thread, then I dozed off for another few hours, woke up, then dozed off for another hour-ish, now I'm up again still feeling very mild heartburn. But I don't have any shortness of breath, no pain in my left arm or anything that would indicate theres something seriously wrong.

Regardless I'm going to see how I'm feeling today and schedule a visit with a doctor just in case something's up.

good man.

I'm almost-positive that it's something mild, and that it's probably stress-related or something of that sort. Some lifestyle changes, based on what you've divulged in the first post, wouldn't hurt at all. I'll be done with school for a bit after Tuesday, and am planning some lifestyle changes myself.

So you are by no means alone in that regard, I'm sure many of us here would benefit from a re-evaluation of our routines as well!

Go to a doctor, get bloodwork done. My family has a semi-history of heart problems. My uncle passed away about 3 years ago of a heart attack, the morning of his appointment for chest pains (that he put off scheduling for months and months). You're probably fine, but the tests will give you peace of mind.

When your problem is health-related anxiety this sounds like a bad idea.

Just to put my two cents in, and reiterate what Fanta and the super-cutie Kay said:

TAKE YOUR ASS TO THE FUCKING DOCTOR, ASAP, OR I WILL SEE TO IT YOU'RE STUCK ON A BUS OF HOT WOMEN YOU'LL BE TOO AFRAID TO SPEAK WITH FOR ALL ETERNITY.

If you have insurance, there's no reason not to go to the doctor.
