I know there are guides but I have a hard time trusting them. I'm much more inclined to believe the word of my fellows here. So would anyone be able to recommend a guide or help me decide what parts to get/not get? The actual building itself, I would be fine with but with all the different parts and manufacturers, I just have no idea where to start. I'd like something that will last me at least 2-3 years and be capable of playing most of the games out/coming out soon without too much trouble.

Thank you buddies,

I'm not an expert by any means. I just read some tech websites when I'm bored at work, some people may be able to give different opinions or more insight:

Processors:
- I feel like Intel has been pummeling AMD ever since Core2Duo has come out, AMD hasn't been able to compete.
- AMD released a new round of processors based on their new Bulldozer architecture, seems like it was a disappointment.
- The current affordable Intel processors are Sandy Bridge (i5 2500k), they just released the Sandy Bridge-E, but it's baller as fuck and way out of your price range (and not worth the extra price)
- The next generation of Intel processors are coming out in ~4 months most likely, Ivy Bridge. I believe they use the same socket as Sandy Bridge and they're not really a huge upgrade (Not worth waiting months for if you want a PC now).

Video Card:
- No clue lol

Hard Drives:
- Wait if you can. Huge flood in Thailand in October jacked the price of everything way up.

Everything else:
- No clue lol

I would lean towards the components around the Excellent level of that chart. To me they seem like a good balance of price:performance that will last a while. The i5 2500k seems really solid and not much worse than the i7 when it comes to games (a lot of i7's advantages are in apps that make heavy use of hyperthreading aka not games). Buy another 560 ti in 2 years when they're way cheaper and SLi those badboys, set for 5 years.

My roommate that doesn't post here has a perpetual boner for AMD procs...which I don't get. There's a lot to like about Intel right now, especially since their procs no longer have pins you have to worry about damaging on installation.

If I were you, I'd just go to Newegg, find the proc you want, see if they have it in a bundle with a motherboard that fits your needs (they usually do). I spent less than $400 on the parts for the computer CJ is going to build himself for Christmas (not counting monitor/keyboard/mouse), and once it's together it'll be damn-near as good as the one my roommate put together a few months back to play Steam games here in the office.

I was looking at the excellent stuff as well. That's about what I want.

Pick anything listed from the "Great (Intel)" line or better. I have a 6870 and it runs everything just fine, although Witcher 2 and BF3 I cannot set to ultra settings and still get 60FPS (read 40+). BF3 runs laggy because I think it uses more than 1GB of VRAM on ultra.

I'd recommend springing for the i5 2400 over the i3 2100 if you do go that route.

i5 2500 (k for overclocking) is preferable, but that was stated above already, and there is likely more combos on Newegg for it. But yes.
