I know you have me on ignore but we already have a thread about this (started by Mazel iirc) and the $178M figure is a lie - that is the cost of the ENTIRE welfare program.

Then again some of us go on believing things to be true even when they've been completely debunked...

I can't seem to find that original thread. My bad for missing it.

Anywho, didn't know that about the 178M figure. The 98% passage rate is still true...which is the crux of the argument. The 178M figure just makes it funnier (if it were true).

98% passage rate isn't true either because in addition to so many people failing, an unspecified number declined to take the test for fear of failing.

Furthermore, the relevance of the 2% figure is predicated on the $178M cost of the test. Tests cost $30 and benefits amount to several thousand a year. Therefore, if even .1% failed the test, the test would be profitable. According to the corrected figures, it is reasonable to deduce that the test paid for itself at least 20 times over.

But I'm sure that - like I said - you'll go on believing what you did before posting this thread despite that your entire argument has been debunked.

"How many people declined to test?" was my first thought.

2% of test takers thought whatever home remedy they heard about from friends/the internet would work and were very wrong.

Doesn't that mean 2% declined or am I reading it wrong?

I saw that second 2% figure. It doesn't smell right - both the "decline to take" AND "fail" figure are 2%? That sounds suspiciously contrived.

Even assuming the figure is legit it corroborates my argument: the test is in the black. And your reaction, Azelma, corroborates my impression that you're meeting being debunked with less grace than a thoughtful man would. The point isn't that "I got you". The point is, the truth of the matter is something other than what you initially believed.

Depending on how long they've been doing this, I see both 2% figures being valid...as in 2% failed outright, and another 2% refused the test.

It's not like you can't beat a drug test.

It's also a lot easier to make sure you're clean when they're giving you an appointment to go take it.

People have found pretty good ways to fool drug tests, especially for marijuana. However, this doesn't really address the biggest problem in Florida, which is prescription drugs (namely Roxies, Xanax, and Adderall as far as I've seen) most of which only stay detectable in urine for around 72 hours. People will always find ways to fool the system. Mouth swabs are fairly easy to beat, as are urine tests. Blood tests have a very small window to test. Hair is most effective, but I have a feeling we'd find most of the men applying for the family with shaved heads.

That said, I still agree with the decision based if not solely on fairness. Most jobs here require a drug test, so should welfare. And it at least weeds (LOL) out those 2% that can afford drugs but not food and rent for their families. I didn't see a legitimate number for how many people are actually included in this 98% though, it looks like they just used random numbers without basis in fact to make their point.

Even according to the opinion piece that is clearly opposed to the testing, it's actually saving the state money, even if the savings is only a few thousand dollars monthly. I'm not sure how a savings amounts "waste in enforcement."

I do like the last paragraph of the actual article:
"This is just punishing people for being poor, which is one of our main points," he said. "We're not testing the population at-large that receives government money; we're not testing people on scholarships, or state contractors. So why these people? It's obvious-- because they're poor."
