Friend background: This guy is the epitome of 'stoop kid' from Hey Arnold. He doesn't leave his stoop (parents' house) unless he's going to work or to pick up cigs. Our circle of friends don't really mind this because his parents are lenient when we come over. Through the end of high school we all toked up at his place because it was the only safe place.

But now our friends have dispersed. They're all in universities while I am at home, attending community college, and he is working full time at kerr drug. He plans to record himself and hopefully get signed, but his material lacks and he doesn't even show effort to improve. Him and I both play guitar, and I am confident in saying that I play better, yet he never asks me, his only close friend around, to jam.

He explains that the only time he enjoys picking up the guitar is when he is songwriting. I was dumbfounded when he told me this because most musicians seek other musicians to play with, in order to improve or create ideas.

He's now 20, still working full time, seeing his girlfriend once a week or so, and still not giving a fuck. When I hit him up to chill, it's always like I'm pulling teeth so I've decided to give him space.

I enjoy the company of this friend, this fellow introvert, but he really doesn't seem interested in anything anymore. Here comes the cliche:
I just don't know how to get through to him.

Edit: Also, he just paid for his macbook, which he plans to use to record himself (protools, not garageband). Months ago, I asked him for his network password, and he refused to track it down, saying "I'll give it to you when I get my macbook." The fuck, man? Anyway, he just got it and now he's saying his dad doesn't want him giving out the network password. I smelt bs when he told me but couldn't figure out why he wouldn't want me knowing.

Hmph.

Perhaps he's slightly insecure about his musical abilities? That's the only thing I could think would be a logical reason for not wanting to jam.

The network password thing is weird. No idea what to make of that.

I dunno, sounds like your buddy has some insecurities. Maybe one way to reach him would be to offer to write a song with him or something.

Side note: Stoop Kid is one of the best episodes of Hey Arnold. I feel like that show was underrated.

sounds like you know he's going to make it big and you're hating that he's leaving you behind.

you're finding a reason to hate him now so that it can grow and bloom into some form of even greater hatred down the track.

And just pat yourself on the back justifying your own judgment of him.

Let people do what they wish.

I miss friends when they're not around but if they wanna be dicks and not hang out, that's their choice.

Everyone usually comes around after awhile.

Sorry, for recording: Macs >>>>>>>>> PCs.

Ask any musician ever and they will agree with that statement. Unless they are terrible.

Not necessarily. Garageband comes standard on macs but isn't the best recording software, it's just easy (for most).

True. ProTools is superior software...but I know all my musically inclined friends only use Macs. The exception was my one buddy in high school, but he was an asshole.

Didn't read anything.

Creating media is the only acceptable use of a mac.

I seriously hope nobody still believes Macs > PCs in all areas regarding photos, video, and music.

I think if you go to any art/design/music school you will find that this is still very true.

My sisters bf is an architect...literally EVERYONE in his class uses a Mac.
My one buddy goes to school for Musical Composition....everyone there uses a Mac.
My other friend is an interior designer and they HAD to get Macs.

When you go to Guitar Center, they sell all sorts of musical instruments, books, and software (both PC and Mac). But the actual computer hardware they sell is only Mac. They have workshops they host only for Garage Band.

Sorry buddy, it's true.

Schools get paid to use Macs, and they probably had that kit setup 10 years ago when it was more true. The college I was in still had shitbucket Macs in their art design section.
