It's exactly what it is. It's thinly veiled racism and its silly to portray it as otherwise.

The schools are both American schools. One is predominantly white, the other has quite a few latinos. Chanting 'USA' serves no purpose other than to rile people up. If it was an international game, it would be more justifiable but still stupid IMO.

Like its just a coincidence? They beat a predominantly Latino team and just felt like expressing some national pride for no apparent reason?

It's not the end of the world, and shouldn't be treated as such. It is tasteless though.

For the sake of argument though, do you think it would be the same controversy if a team of predominantly Latino/Mexican students beat a mostly white team and started chanting "Viva Mexico!"

Chanting USA USA USA could be racism and it could be simple chanting. They live in America, they're playing in America, if anything they should be chanting too!

It occurs to me that when I hear phrases like "thinly veiled racism" that the people hung up on race are the ones using the phrase. The "USA" chant is, in general, a bit of campy fun. How many times have we done it jokingly on this board, even when the subject had nothing to do with national pride? When I was a kid, they used to do it all the time in professional wrestling, sometimes even when the "bad guy" wrestler wasn't a fake foreigner. Much ado about nothing, in my opinion.

Wrecking face in a BG against races such as Tauren and orcs is a lot different than chanting it at a sports event.

Come on Jubber, be honest with yourself. This isn't the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic squad beating Team Russia and defying all expectations.

It's just innocuous enough that if someone mentions it, they are accused of 'much ado about nothing'.

What does national pride have to do with two competing high school teams from the same nation?

Never mind that nationalism is pretty fucking stupid a concept anyway.

I think I implied, if didn't just state, that it doesn't have anything to do with national pride. It's just something goofy that people do. This is just making mountains out of molehills. Even if we all knew for a fact that there was nothing even remotely racist about the actions of the students in question, there would still be those people who would pull the "people were offended" bullshit. It has nothing to do with the kids and the "USA" chant and everything to do with people looking for something to be outraged about to show how 'enlightened' and 'concerned' they are.

You make it sound like there's no stakes. There are. This is a state that has tried to strip these people of their rights and subject them to harassment and detention at will.

Disrespecting them and questioning their loyalty is part of that. No real change can come without questioning thinking and attitude.
