You guys are pretty dysfunctional, but I can respect it.

So anyway... Jack White's new album Blunderbuss... I was reading comments on Tumblr so I decided to make this for all the hipsters:

If you don't know who Jack White is, he was part of the White Stripes, Raconteurs, and recently the Dead Weather. He's a great musician who doesn't know how to settle down with a band.

After breaking up the White Stripes, he okay'd the selling of their songs into MULTIPLE commercials and trailers. Beer, car, and other commercials. I say, the only way I'll consider buying a hard copy is if he stops selling out a great band.

I've always disliked the term sell-out. It's way over used....and ironically Hipsters use it quite a bit - generally I've heard them use it for any band/musician who has achieved some sort of mainstream appeal. You become a "sell out" as soon as people who don't exclusively frequent dingy record stores decide to buy your music.

And really, if you license your song to a commercial, you're a sell out? If you try to make a dime off of your own work, you are somehow lacking integrity? I think people are tied to the "starving artist" label like it's some sort of amazing thing, the pinnacle of human achievement. If you write a song and some company says "hey we like this song, we'll give you $$$ to use it" you're just silly if you don't at least consider it because you don't want to "sell out." I'm not saying license your songs to Walmart, BP, or Exxon Mobile simply because they offer you millions...but I don't think it makes you evil if you license your song in a car commercial, and it doesn't make a good song any less so.

Now I know some of you will disagree with me, and that's fine. But in my opinion, calling people "sell outs" is way over done.

The music loses its cultural and artistic value when its emotional import is used to just sell shit.

I would agree with Xeoni.

I don't watch TV so that doesn't come up often for me.

But then I still listen to primarily classic rock.

In the context of the commercial? Yes. I agree with you. If someone were to put Stairway to Heaven in a beer commercial, the song would not have its true artistic value in that commercial. There would be no emotional import.

HOWEVER - would that then mean that if I am listening to Stairway to Heaven on my iPod that it would no longer be a good song, have any artistic value, and that I would lose all semblance of an emotional connection and response to it? I think not.

I would also like to bring up the fact that classical music is still used in many commercials. Does it take away from the beauty of Mozart's work that it has been used in some shitty car commercial? I don't believe it has.

HOW DARE YOU LINK THAT IN USD'S FACE!

When you think Usd, you should think something like this. Only difference is, when you Usd does this, he's not dreaming. It's his morning commute to work.

After watching that commercial again, I can safely say that I stand by my comments 100%.

I don't agree. I'd also point out that the reason they do is that it's in the public domain. Meanwhile, these same firms continue to try to extend copyright laws into perpetuity so they can keep materials made 75 years ago from becoming public domain.

It favors big money and frustrates small artists. Either you make something that appeals to the lowest common denominator and give up all rights, or you have to give your stuff away. This is why there are no modern-day Mozarts and the general level of artistic freedom has gone down.

The answer, I think, is to reform IP and tax laws to discourage freeloading and copyright hoarding.

Jack White, in my eyes, has always been a special case. He's teetered on the brink of mainstream success ever since the Stripes released White Blood Cells, but he's never leapt into the spotlight in the way that Steven Tyler, Ozzy Osbourne and a lot of other rock music personas have in the past decade. While White's still able to make bank based on the quality of his music and the enigmatic image associated with it, he's far from starring in reality shows or appearing in commercials with Justin Bieber --- something that I can respect on an artistic level regardless of how much money he makes.
