This is mostly directed at Aestu, but I welcome everyone's input here.

Long story short, I'd like to fill my free time with reading. No, not reading stuff like the Halo books or Game of Thrones. I mean real reading. History, philosophy, classical literature, that kind of thing. Something that will help me become more of an active reader. God forbid, if I need to take the MCATs again, this skill would really help. Perhaps it's not the right way to go about it, but if nothing else, I will learn. I know Aestu sometimes quotes titles that he's read as illustrative supplements to his arguments. Instead of going back and looking for them, however, I figured I'd start a thread about it.

What are some good places for me to start? Much appreciated <3

The Consolations of Philosophy by Alain de Botton

It's a self-help/philosophy book with six chapters concerning six people: Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, and Montaigne.

Edit: It's considered an intro to philosophy book, but I think that's only because it likes to relate to modern day troubles.

Histories of the roman empire and ww2 europe always interested me, if you can get editions closer to the actual events. newer editions are fine, but more political correctness colored truths than anything. Old school histories were more raw and, in my opinion, better written because political correctness didn't strangle the authors hard work.

Broadly, I'm interested in learning about history (historical accounts, opinions, etc) and philosophy. They don't have to be textbook-like, and I enjoy reading primary sources.

So far so good, keep em coming bros!

EDIT: I'm also interested in well-written stories, but not the "mainstream" stuff like Harry Potter and Twilight (lol). I'd also prefer to learn something from them, like a lesson of life, rather than just find out what happens to the characters.

Oh, another way you bros could do this is just give me a list of a few books that were influential to you, and taught you something.

Classical literature is not necessarily better than modern literature. All the same, I have recommendations.

Candide by Voltaire if you can find an English translation. L'Ingénu is also good, though I'm not sure it's ever been translated.

Any Molière play (again, if you can find English translations), particularly Tartuffe, The School for Wives (L'école des Femmes), The Miser (L'Avare), The Learned Ladies (Les Femmes Savantes), and The Would-Be Noble (Le Bourgeois gentilhomme). Aestu will probably appreciate The Learned Ladies as well.

The Decameron by Boccaccio. It's like the Canterbury Tales, only good.

I also want to indirectly recommend Immanuel Kant, because he has the right ideas on universalism versus relativism.

And sort of worth it is The Communist Manifesto if you've never read it.

I also seem to recall a thread where parenting was being discussed, and the titles of some books that kids should read were being tossed around. Some of them I, admittedly, had not read. Now, if they were all children's books then nvm, but if not let me know.

I'm compiling a list using this thread. Thanks guys, keep em coming!

Oh, sorry I didn't actually answer; I was hoping I could just mail you some stuff but if you don't feel comfortable with Aestu knowing where you live...

The Peloponnesian War
Livy's History of Rome
The Guns of August
A Distant Mirror

Some good history books. All are fairly long. I'm curious which you'll pick first.

Just realised of all the dozens of communist books and such i've read, i've never actually read any Marx apart from the ~15 page extract we had to read in my first POLS paper 10 years ago. It's like i've read everything except that by the man himself.

From my loleducation my three favourites books i ever read were Robert Dahl's Polyarchy, Theda Skocpol's States and Social Revolutions, and Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks. Peloponnesian War is a good one too.

I dearly want to get into the reading. Quite tempted to give the Shakespeare a try. I hear he was a big deal. I think we read Othello at school, and i saw the film with inception boy in it. I kinda feel i read too much non fiction and the only fiction i ever read involves wizards.
