In WoW.

Is it having multiple max level alts? Is it having a lot of achievements? Is it having cold hard cash? What spikes up the value of an account?

I think all of those things are factors.

Really though, existing and being sold back in 2007 is what spikes up the value of an account.

Oh, stuff? What about junk and crap and whatnot? Or is it primarily stuff?

Supply and demand, as always. Using Aestu as an example, how many accounts are there with 3+ max level characters all with decent gear (at least) and one main with absurdly good gear. Maxed professions and maxed riding across all 3 or toons, and a fuckton of mounts and noncombat pets.

However this is only part of the equation. Demand for WoW accounts is lower than its been because subscriber numbers are down as well, and the general consensus is that the game is on the decline.

Aestu does not have "amazingly good" gear. Her gear appears far better than it is because of presentation - proper gemming, full enchants, shirt/tabard, transmog, title, facial appearance, color-coordination between sword, board, armor, and complexion, and the skill and panache of the player behind the keyboard.

This may seem vain and even delusional, but the armor and face make the goatchick just as surely as the clothes make the man. Do not underestimate the power of presentation.

I have eight classes at 85, all professions and specializations at 525, and nearly all recipies. The main draw, of course, would be Aestu's mounts, pets, legendaries, but also the stuff in her bank. I'll post an ss when I get home.

In answer to Xeoni, the junk in Aestu's trunk will become a bigger draw in MoP when synergy with the classic ZA bear becomes possible.

Accounts are certainly worth less now, but I don't believe the value of an advanced account will ever become insignificant. Attrition will continue to remove old accounts that can never be retrieved, and there will always be more than zero xhurn in the community, just like in any niche hobby far past its prime. By way of example, commodities associated with 70s and 80s gaming still sell well.

I understand the power of presentation. It's true in real life situations, I see no reason why that wouldn't carry over into WoW.

Your gear is far better than most, but the gear isn't what makes your account valuable as you mentioned. It's the completeness. The gear will be obsolete soon, transmog benefit aside.

I never understood buying accounts in general, unless it's secure + simply to avoid the cost of additional Xpacs.

Especially during T4-T5 content, when that hunter sold his account for like $10k. Ridiculous.

No it is not. Aestu has no heroic gear and is still using three pieces of LFR or FL gear. Thanks to the DS buff, even total terribads have full regular DS gear and most have a substantial amount of heroic DS gear. There's over two dozen 10-man groups that have downed heroic DW on BH.

I mean, I know where you're coming from, but the game has been dumbed down more than you can imagine. I simply don't raid anymore at all, so I don't keep up with even bads who do.

It may be more rare, but it cannot fly and thus I would find it useless.

If you took my main account for example, I have 10 max level characters, one of each class. I have a handful of rare mounts but nothing extremely special. My account however would not be worth a whole lot to a gold farmer because most of my gathering skills are on my second account and I have less than 100k gold across all characters. My mage does have some of the good twink enchants but buyers usually are not smart enough to look that deep. No massive pvp titles other than sgt major on my lock and I just got that last night so it is not the old title. Now if you took an account like Jushiro in wrath that was gold capped on several toons you would out value my account by a wide margin. My second account has 7 max level characters and would probably go for close to what my main would since of the number of gathering professions that are maxed and there is room to make a new character or two. I also probably have too many engineers to entice an account buyer since engineering has a niche market and most people are not crazy enough to level 3, and 4 alchemist.

9 level 90s and 10 85s, Damn I need another hobby.

I guess my only concern at this point is whether it's more prosperous to farm achievements/titles or to get a few more classes to max level. Right now I have a Paladin, Druid, DK, and Warlock @ 85.

Edit: Does having classes with both factions increase or decrease value?

Are you that hard up? In terms of time investment, powerlevelling WoW accounts to sell is less profitable than picking up cans and bottles off the street.

No, seriously.

Say you sell an account for five hundred dollars.
Say you walk down the street, picking up a can every five minutes, that's $0.60 an hour.

That means, for powerlevelling that account to be more efficient than picking up cans and bottles, you would have to powerlevel it in under a thousand hours, or about 40 days.

Assuming it takes you three days to bring a character to 85, and two more to gear out the character, that means that at break-even in terms of time efficiency, your account would have eight 85s with current gear.

Does eight 85s with current gear seem a reasonable package to sell for $500? I would think so.

Now if you can level and gear faster, or otherwise bring the account to maturity faster, by farming items etc, then you might just beat picking up cans and bottles. But realistically, WoW isn't much good as anything other than a recreational time sink.
