Alright a little background here, recently I was brought on as an interning writer for Muze Magazine (small start up magazine). First article given was about the new Red Dawn remake set to come out over the summer. So roll back 2 hours ago, I started writing and watching the film (awesome movie) and got a decent way through it.
Basically, for those who haven't seen the film Russians invade Spokane, WA and a group of high schoolers fight them off. Stars Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, The chick from Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller's Sisters and a few other people.
Well the remake doesn't look that bad, considering the cast, and the directors. Fucking Thor, Josh Peck (The Wackness), the new transformers chick, and some girl from Friday Night Lights. Solid cast, and the director did all the stunt coordination for the Bourne Films + a lot of Jason Statham films.
3/4 way through writing the article, it gets deleted and I get a letter from my editor saying this:
Quote:
Michael Dykstra
Evan, I read through the start you have on the red dawn remake Take a look at this review in the atlantic
http://www.theatlantic.com/internationa ... nk/261009/ That's along the lines of what I was looking for. Not that long, but similar is tone. Sorry but we wont publish a positive review of this movie because it's pretty clear it's gonna be a piece of crap LOL
So.... you can rewrite it OR ditch it. I'd prefer you move on to another article and for now stay away from reviews. Maybe start with a few video posts? Or a food article?
Well okay boss let's take a look at the article...huh it's going to be a shitty movie because it's illogical and fictional, versus I argued it would be an okay action flick because of the cast and director. Well okay, he's telling me "your opinion sucks, write someone else's opinion", in a review piece....the fuck.
So i send him back an email stating that I'll rewrite it to make it a bit more negative, but i'm not saying the movie is shit because another publication is saying so, and doing so is commiting Journalism suicide. I write not for what people want to hear, but what I have to say.
And then 5 minutes pass and i get this:
Quote:
Michael Dykstra good luck Eric! I have something like 23 writers. I don't think it's going to work out at this point but good luck with your career. Thanks much for giving this a try
So wow, 1st day on the internship, I get shit canned because I'm not going to be someone's puppet and throw away my morals/ethics.
So the question is:
Should I have handled this differently, or was I correct in being....well me?
