Is Facebook banned over there?

Russia has a lot of rural and extremely remote / desolate areas. I imagine that's fairly accurate. I don't think it's banned, if it is people sign on anyway via tunneling programs.

Facebook is legal in Russia, but for many of the same reasons as in the US (vast distances and disparate, atomized society) it is ineffectual at bringing about political change.

Due to lack of infrastructure, political accountability and economic support, Internet access doesn't empower remote regions in Russia. It's a very centralized society. Everyone who's anyone lives in Moscow or St. Petersburg, which are the two bright spots you see. It's been this way since the days of the tsars.

The small rough square you see to the southeast is the Chelyabinsk industrial region, home to most of the country's heavy industry and technical academies.

Nihilism is a copout.

I think it was Europe(?) that made it so you can't say "Facebook" on radio or television. You have to say "Social Networking Sites".
